Amtrak cascades are rolling out new Airo train sets

I was on a sold-out older train, so it’s great to have modern trains with full capacity so more people in the NW can ride

But there’s little effort from #orleg to improve speed, increase service, or expand the network

#transitsky #amtrak #trains
Today @amtrak.com debuted their first Airo trains on @amtrakcascades.wsdot.wa.gov! We are excited to welcome our beloved train line here in the PNW into a new era of passenger rail.

The state needs a decisive transit plan to cut carbon emissions but it seems to be doing the opposite

The largest ODOT projects will both expand highways and cost 3.5 & 15.5+ billion dollars

These costs WILL limit road maintenance funding & prevent transit projects

While up there we only used transit to get around and took the train back down to Albany

Space usage is an important lens regarding transit. A Single MAX car takes up about as much space as 5 parked cars (less when moving since cars spread out)

That’s 22 cars that won’t be contributing to traffic or fighting for parking. this was just a sort ride on one traincar

In Portland, here’s my estimated number of cars the streetcars I was in helped replace:

MAX blue line: 22
red line: 14
orange line: 12
B loop streetcar: 22
yellow line: 14

The distances varied, the point isn’t to compare it’s to consider how much space 22 cars is

Some follow up on the Oregon transportation survey. While its not an exact comparison to the actual ODOT budget, it’s clear people want the state to prioritize and spend more money on road maintenance and on reliable transit

#orleg #transitsky #urbanism #transit
The 9000 sampled Oregonians (40% not from PDX) thought transit should be 19% of OR’s transpo budget.

From 2023-2025, the legislature proposed 8% of budget to to transit; the governor cut that to 7%.

Oregonians ranked maintaining and preserving highways and bridges and improving safety as the top priorities they think the Oregon Department of Transportation should focus on as it looks to resolve a $200 million budget gap in the 2027-29 budget cycle.

Given the rapid increase in gas prices I would like to advise people about Corvallis’s bus system

With OSU in session 2/3/5/6 unfortunately switch down to every 40 minutes, but it’s still a free way to get around without having to worry about parking

Oregon's roads are in *terrible* shape - among the worst in the country! - and yet Governor Kotek, the Oregon Legislature and ODOT are still thinking about spending *billions* on a single hwy project to double the width of I-5 instead of maintaining our state's existing roads and bridges.

enough!
Oregon has one of the nation’s largest funding gaps to meet road maintenance needs • Oregon Capital Chronicle

A major section of I-5 southbound is closed in Portland and traffic remains near normal

ODOT plans to spend billions to add lanes in the rose quarter, but clearly alternatives to that route exist. If we invested in transit instead, traffic would decrease

#transitsky #orleg #highways #buses
Today's "Carmaggedon" report: It takes about 33 minutes to go from Vancouver City Hall to Portland City Hall, about 7 minutes longer than on a typical pre-closure weekday, and well within the usual 20-40 minute range reported by Google Maps. (Today is on left; Typical "pre-closure" on right)

Getting new trains for the Amtrak cascades is great, but our state should be doing more to expand and increase rail usage

This includes both supporting running trains more frequently AND looking to build rail to reach more parts of the state

#amtrak #orleg #trains #transitsky #transit
The cuts to bus service will get worse without bold leadership from the Oregon Legislature next session.

Will we restore and expand public transit? Or will we continue to give billions of dollars to ODOT for their costly, polluting freeway expansions?

I rode the bike downtown to farmers market in Corvallis this weekend

Overall it was fun (and removes the hassle of finding a parking space for a car) but I still find that 3rd/4th street are kind of a hostile towards biking to the waterfront
