It's a rare policy that would be welcomed by both business and trade unions - and at the same time would *improve* the UK's fiscal position.

Slavery Abolition Act of got Royal Assent on this day in 1833. It freed about 800,000 people. 45,000 slave owners (3000 in the UK) were paid compensation for human property: a total of £20 million in 1833 - about £3 billion by inflation (or much more 40% of Treasury income, or 5% of GDP in 1833)

If early release can be altered so as to exempt homicide offences, it should be. Prisoners who have caused the gravest harm should be among the last to benefit from the overcrowding crisis.
But carving out exceptions for individual prisoners in response to media campaigns is weak and unprincipled.
