This is the best account of the rationalist sex cult aspect of things I’ve seen.

I stand by thinking “the intellectual foundations of this entire panic are built on sand” is the more important headline, but this thread hammers home how absolutely shitty people they all are too.
some middle rat history, w/clarifications:

1) I should have titled my previous "AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult In Berkeley, California" so people would stop arguing with me about people who aren't in Berkeley, California.

2) The sex cult part of this is both predatory and integral to what they do.

I will also stress that Neoreaction a Basilisk is not in any way an op except inasmuch as the op was to write something interesting that people would want to read, and then use the money to move to Ithaca.
i keep seeing 'this is all a psyop' takes from totally-not-effective-altruist-or-rationalist people so

as one of the chief belligerents i want to make it clear that i am a free actor and i just do not like your faction

everyone who knows who you guys are just saw you almost win and it terrified us

I think focusing on the "sex cult" aspect of the rationalists, while understandable for attention-grabbing, puts the emphasis in the wrong places. Sure, yes, the rats have sex, and because they're a fucked up abusive cult, some of that is fucked up abusive culty sex, but that's not the focus.

Actually, this is a point I don’t think I ever make clear enough.

Last War in Albion is written for a general audience. You don’t have to have read the comics. Maybe read Watchmen, but that’s it.

Also, v2 is a fine starting point. V1 is great, but you can jump on here.

“Energy independence” only gets you so far in an economically interdependent world.

The problem is that "while you weren't looking the tech industry was comprehensively taken over by a cult based around a piece of Harry Potter fanfic" is self-evidently an absolutely ridiculous claim that can't possibly have happened, which is a real problem given that it 100% did happen.
The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:

It’s fascinating to me that Schoenbrun is the trans filmmaker to break through and get widespread cis acclaim. Not that she doesn’t deserve it. Just that she’s absolutely from the pervert freak wing of the Community, and you don’t instinctively expect that to be where the popular success comes from.
All I'm going to say is that if you love movies you need to see Teenage Sex and at Camp Miasma. If you didn't like it, I don't want to hear about it because your opinion is wrong.

PATEL: The previous regulation automatically disqualified any individual who participated in either side of it

KENNEDY: Either side of beastiality? So you disqualified the animal?

P: Well, we have great canines, but we're not going to disqualify them

K: I'm trying to understand why you did this.

"I am not complicit" I love it I'm putting it on a shirt
Ed Sheeran has released a statement on Macklemore being removed from his tour for speaking up for Palestine:

“I am not complicit. […] Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn't mean I don't have [my own opinions], and it doesn't mean I don't care.”

the worst thing is they seem to have folded it into a claim they already rejected my dispute on THREE YEARS AGO. THEY ALREADY GET ALL MY MONEY FROM THIS

idk why so many people are prefacing their support for macklemore's very thoughtful statement with some dorky joke about how cringe his music is. like apart from the fact that it's not the time i think we're far enough away from its overplay period to admit that "downtown" was a pretty great song
