Transit polls well. We use that popularity to push for more reliable & abundant transit. Let's make it better than driving.

The 350m stretch of King between Simcoe and John is a rare portion of the streetcar network without private vehicles, curbside parking, signalised intersections, special track work, car stops, or other operating restrictions. This allows cars to frequently reach the maximum road speed of 50 km/h.

When will Toronto fix its streetcars?
Daily 503 bus appreciation post. Here is our bus whizzing past a 504 King streetcar that is crawling across the Queen Viaduct due to a slow zone only for streetcar. It will then have to stop and inspect the points at King before proceeding. Meanwhile the bus has long left the streetcar in the dust.

Ottawa transit ridership is down because it's slower than it used to be, with more transfers. Oh and less reliable.
Lots of fun factoids in this dashboard.

Like: the Strandherd park and ride sees 21 per cent usage of its spaces; it takes an hour to get downtown by transit from there. Driving takes half that at peak traffic time.

You would save on downtown parking, but at the cost of an hour of your day.
Last week's commute is now in the rearview mirror:

Thursday was the busiest day for car travel

Friday was the least busy day for car travel

The dirty secret is that rich people need to live in politically stable regimes in order to keep their wealth. They will piss and moan about taxes, but they will not flee en masse. They like paved roads and not being kidnapped too much.
New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment.

There's no way that's good for the longevity of that train
I love taking the train between San Diego and Los Angeles since it's such a gorgeous view but there's just no way it'll still exist on the same track a generation from now.

Cleveland 1961: Within seven weeks, Max James, 6, and Belinda Drummond, 11, were both killed walking home from school along South Miles Road. They had no sidewalk to use.

Demanding sidewalks, mothers formed a human wall to protect children. Jane Martoncik was there to lend her support to the cause.

For years - years (!!!) - I pitched the idea that Edmonton was the market-oriented housing model for Canadian conservatives. I always got the that's nice, too niche treatment.

Sure enough, the model is working as expected. And now it's not niche, it's...bad?

Proof that culture Trump's ideology.
