This -- and only this -- is why Madame Web didn't make billions at the box office. The characters were too well-rounded and realistic.
There’s nothing wrong with escapist wish-fulfillment entertainment where protagonists are never wrong or vulnerable, but if that’s ALL you engage in then when you encounter a fully rounded character with realistic flaws and limitations you tell everyone on GoodReads they’re an asshole and an idiot.
These are not fully formed ideas but what I am sensing is a toxic combination of:
- So few people reading quality fiction where you have to put yourself in someone else's shoes & actually pay attention, rather than reading passively. This results in lacking basic reading skills.

Something I learned early about my fandoms (tabletop, anime) is that some people are only there because they've been driven out of every other social group. They don't even like the thing, it's just that if they try to join another ska band they'll be killed.
