One of the best Jane Austen adaptations of the VHS era by far. The cast is perfect. When the piano and French horns of the Carl Davis score play, I’m transported.

Years ago when I was a PhD student, Prof. Alexa Joubin asked me if I would like to contribute an entry, related to Shakespeare in South Asia, in a book she was editing, The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Global Shakespeare. link.springer.com/rwe/10.1007/... Prof. Emma Smith lists it here @fivebooks.com

The great Marina Tarlinskaya's final book is forthcoming: manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526192868/

I was deeply saddened to hear of Marina's passing earlier this year. It was a privilege to call her a co-author, colleague, and friend. A remarkable scholar and a truly unique individual.

Thank you and farewell, 💜✊🏽❤️ Robin! When I was arrested in NYC for defacing an Islamophobic, pro-Israel ad in 2012, she was my call from jail. She stayed up all night alerting everyone she could, trying to bail me out. As your incredible anthologies reminded us: Sisterhood is Global

Gloria Steinem was a courageous, generous woman. Her legacy to advance the cause of women worldwide was tremendous. My sister met Steinem at Vassar College in 2012. Steinem, erudite on most subjects, talked to her about feminism in Islam & Khadija bint Khuwaylid. Rest in Power. @vassar.bsky.social

Kamal Amrohi’s 1972 film Pakeezah has been an absolute favorite in my family for decades. It has been restored by India’s Film Heritage Foundation. The film has had many imitators, including Sanjay Lee Bhansali’s Heeramandi. The original is unmatched. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainmen...

Jurassic Park made an entire generation of millennials like me interested in paleontology, geology, earth science, and conservation. Sam Neill was instrumental in shaping the film. He brought a charismatic presence to this concept of the conscientious scientist. He was also an environmentalist (1/2)

The 1981 British tv version, for budget reasons, did away with the character of Margaret altogether. The Irish actor Bosco Hogan does fine job of playing Edward Ferrars—especially the slightly shifty aspect of his character that’s ignored in favor of the romantic hero. (2/2)
Yes yes *another* Austen adaptation 🙄 BUT I’m intrigued by Georgia Oakley’s Sense & Sensibility - her Section 28 drama Blue Jean is *great* & the Irish Dashwood casting here is *interesting*

There are various compelling adaptations of Sense and Sensibility. The 2000 Rajiv Menon film Kandukondain Kandukondain-though sumptuous and intimate, which came out after Ang Lee’s, is guilty of copying the narrative structure of that film too closely-Copy-paste but w/ lovely local flavor. (1/2)
