Huge professional news. I’ve never played the Kingdom Hearts games and…I think I’m going to do it.

I’ve been alive for almost half a century. It’s time. Maybe if I get through the whole series I’ll add it to my tenure binder next year.

Man I am just super curious how much people got paid to produce blockbuster analysis like "I dunno man, it's possible that the beans really are magic, though!"
This seems like an extremely optimistic scenario ("grow into it"). Economies don't usually grow into bubble valuations. I guess more optimistic way of framing this is that it all comes down to bets on the future of AI. If it's right it's right. But sounds like a bubble. www.axios.com/newsletters/...

Yeah I mean as a faculty member in the South, like…100%. The thing is I’m not sure jobs in “blue” states are better. I see this as an outcome of institutional capture by an administrative class that is disconnected from the academic purpose of these schools. There’s a deeper rot we need to address.
"'I have no confidence, whatsoever, that my administration will support faculty if academic freedom is under assault,' one [survey response read]...'In the past few weeks, administrators have told faculty to not speak, teach or research certain things.'"

Cool man, lived long enough to see the biggest dumbasses on the planet lock us into a WWI-esque escalation spiral. But hey, nothing to be done because literally everyone with an iota of institutional power has made the bet that no matter how bad things get, somehow they will remain untouched.
Trump: "Effective immediately, the US Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz...Additionally & at an appropriate moment, we are fully 'LOCKED AND LOADED,' & our Military will finish up little that is left of Iran!"

I'd be lying if I said this line of thinking hasn't been running through my head while I've been shepherding a 7-year-old these weeks.

I have a lot of dueling despondency and rage inside me right now and man, what do we even do with that.

Let me say this plainly: Iranian children have as much of a right to live and thrive as American children.

Their babies MUST be as precious to me as my 6 niblings and my baby grandnib are IF I want them to have a future.

If I want a future for my kin AND humanity, I MUST act like it.

So must you.

Just to be clear, Lindsey was a JAG who never even sniffed combat because he was AD during the late ‘80s. So, you know, he didn’t “do” shit.

He sure is a fan of sending other people out into harm’s way, though!

I cannot believe we’re going to do this shit AGAIN, I haven’t even finished my mid-life crisis yet.

I better see all the assholes who voted for this - particularly the ones who sat out round 1 - strapping up. No more cheering from the sidelines and listening to podcasts tell you how brave you are.

There are lots of days that I'm like "am I doing enough? Am I good enough?" but then I remember that I'm not in front of Congress today being like "yeah I lied about going to pedo island, I went with my kids BUT DIDN'T LEAVE ANY" and I'm like...you know, it's okay, you can watch a movie today.

Something that leaders in higher education might learn from - sometimes the right answer when they come to rip out every value and norm that undergirds your institution is to say “fuck you, fire me”.

You know, the opposite of institutional awe! (Credit to John Warner for the term).
NEWS: The cuts were so severe that at least one department head asked to leave The Post rather than be included in the planning.

Peter Finn, The Post's international editor, requested that he be laid off once he learned about the scope of the cuts to his section.

Man at some point, if we get the chance, we really need to think hard about how the dumbest assholes alive got so much money and power.

I mean I know, neoliberalism and unfettered capitalism BUT STILL

Cool to see the administration essentially stealing millions of dollars from Central Florida - an outcome I assure you has absolutely nothing to do with these districts doing anything resembling “woke”.

Just the rich stealing from the rest, same as it ever was
Yesterday, I shared my @educationwork.newamerica.org team's district impact analysis of the $6+ billion that the Trump admin is refusing to disburse to schools (link in 2nd post). Now, @edweek.org has published our funding figures for ALL districts in the US for which we have data. Search for yours↓

Hundreds of districts will lose more than $1 million each, according to a new analysis.

I think we dramatically underestimate how important faith is to educating. March captured this idea when he talked about “irrational optimism”. And buddy…I’m having like the biggest crisis of faith right now. Hard to preach the gospel of human potential when you’re starting to root for the meteor.

It seems obvious in retrospect because we’re living in a world defined by ubiquitous institutional collapse, but I don’t think there’s a work with more daily relevance to my life than Albert Hirschman’s Exit, Voice, and Loyalty. Just living every day with this meme in my head:

My administration, facing down a hurricane, went with "let's just swap to remote classes!"

Have we done this for past storms? No. Is there a plan for if power is out? Internet? Nah. Have students received instructions re: tech? Lol. Faculty just have to make it happen, using their own resources.

Think I'm finally hitting the point where it's time to bail on higher ed and go back to K-12. For all the incredible challenges of the K12 system, it is still humanizing at its best. I don't rightly know what HE is anymore, but it isn't humanizing.

At this point it's all just feels like extraction
