It would appear I am now a columnist at Inside Higher Ed. My first piece focuses on McCarthyism, censorship, and our current moment in higher education. This is an essay I started nearly 6 months ago so I'm glad to finally share it with y'all.

I'm not allowed to read this the same way I'm not allowed to read about Black women's unemployment
From 1979-2007, Black women with bachelor’s degrees were the only group of women to maintain labor force participation rates above 80 percent.

Yet, despite their high labor force participation, highly educated Black women have been—and continue to be—systematically held back from upward mobility.

ChatGPT is adding real cartoonists’ signatures to fake New Yorker cartoons
OpenAI's chatbot isn't just imitating the magazine's style. It's also falsely attributing AI-generated images to real artists.

the blessing and curse of LLMs for science imo is that they reduce the cost of 'let's run one more model' to basically nothing.

In 2022, Congress gave the Dept. of Ed $1M and directed it to launch a nationwide survey on college students’ experience with sexual violence.

Four years later, there is still no federal data—and some say it’s hindering university leaders.

Why Federal Data on Campus Sexual Assault Is Still Missing
The Cornell allegations have reignited discussion about campus sexual assault, and advocates say a nationwide climate survey would help address the persistent issue.

This was a very good, thorough analysis
Working on this reported essay, just published, increasingly took over my life for the last two months. PEN America did a terrible disservice with its sloppy reporting about American Jews and Israelis in publishing in July. Josh Lambert and I tried to do better. jewishcurrents.org/what-pen-ame...

The true origin is the legislature itself, which recommended that UM be given autonomy and an elected board in an 1840. Prior to that, the corrupt frontier legislature nearly killed UM. The independence allowed UM to flourish, and it was deemed good for the other major state-focused universities.

I very much like this notion of “in the statistical style.” The ideological fashion of quantitative prediction without any of the underpinning that makes it fact based or useful.Because a factual basis would necessitate being aware of the limits of this method for understanding things in the world.
for the new york times magazine, I wrote about why everything is "gambling" now (the short answer: actually everything is the statistical style now, and gambling is just how most of us understand that)
How Everything Became Gambling
It’s not just DraftKings and Polymarket — the logic of gambling undergirds everything coming out of Silicon Valley.

A nonfiction book written in, let’s say, the year 1795, is most likely still around in a library somewhere and every other work it referred to is probably accessible in some archive as well. A nonfiction book written in 2007 probably cites a bunch of urls that are dead or rotted beyond recognition.
