I finished listening to Damsel today, written by Elana K Arnold & narrated by Elizabeth Knowelden.

A prince rescues a damsel from a dragon - but she's got no memories of her life before, & no family concerned about her fate. The damsels never do.

Step up, and share this around to encourage others to do the same. I'll probably be gone less than a year from now, and I want to be able to leave secure in the knowledge that my work will continue apace.
I'm sensitive because I'm dying, and this is my life's work. I've been on social media for hours almost every day for well over a decade encouraging, educating, fundraising, doing whatever I can to make the world a better place.

I need more people to shoulder the burden so I can go in peace.

ok gonna get Sincere(TM) here for a second

There's a lot of doomerism about how "We're all cooked" because "The GOP is trying to steal our votes."

So here's the true story of how the GOP tried to steal our votes here in NC and FAILED. TWICE.

Ballot fraud isn't final. It gets stopped all the time.

We need more wildlife #crossings! And bills in the US House & Senate would fund them: the Wildlife Road Crossings Program Reauthorization Act of 2025 provides long-term funding for wildlife crossings. Both House & Senate bills have bipartisan support, so there's a chance of getting them passed.

Take part in Tasmania's annual population tracking of noisy but elusive species...
Choose your survey square (anywhere in the state, there's one <6 km from you) & book your recorder.
Help discover who's calling where—& over time, how their populations are going!

The book group selection for September is Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice.

It's an apocalypse story set in a remote reservation up in Canada. We never find out the cause, we just see how the community handles things (or not).

& it's not sci fi or fantasy...

Finished listening to Eric Garcia's book We're Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation (read by the author).

Lots of firsthand accounts & interviews, from the beginning of autism in the DSM to about 2020. It was very interesting & will be useful.

If you see this, post your getaway vehicle.

(There's even a Matchbox banana car!)

(This is a picture from the Detroit Free Press. I didn't see it this summer, but it's always a crapshoot on where it's going to be.)

Do NOT come down hard on federal government agencies that change Lake Ontario to Lake America. Trump can order them to do so.
DO come down hard on any company, state government, or other group that makes that change. Trump's order has NO legal power over them.

I'd like to remind people that today's "clanker" discourse started with a video by a prosthetics user saying that people were using the term "clanker" at her, because of the prosthetics.

However you feel about AI, please remember that some people are using that term to refer to prosthetics users.

I think that I finally understand the root of the malaise in U.S. society.

There are no social sanctions for being an asshole.

People can be absolutely horrible to one another, but provided they are affluent and white, there is no social penalty.

We need to stigmatize assholes.

Listened to The Wolf & the Woodsman, written by Ava Reid & narrated by Saskia Maarleveld. The write-up said it was a fantasy based on Hungarian history & Jewish folklore - which means now I need to read *those* things.

It's enemies-to-lovers with magic & religion & court intrigue.

This month's book club pick was Freezing Point, written by Anders Bodelsen & translated from the Danish by Joan Tate.

A fiction editor in 1973, diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, becomes one of the first people to be "frozen down". He's awakened in 1995 & 2022, & each time things are worse.

Hope is a thing that fights in the dark.
Hope isn't some gentle little darling in the breeze, all fluttery lace. Hope is spitting blood on the sidewalk as it gets back up, face cut & bruised, still laughing. Always. Fucking. Laughing. Like they don't get the joke. They don't get the mistake they made in trying to keep it down. THAT'S HOPE.

Before the semester begins, can you look at your schedule and find 30m a day to take a break? Ideally it's lunch or dinner (depending on when you work) - time to fuel up on more than mini Snickers bars and string cheese (I speak from experience). But rest your brain. Walk. Stare at a wall.
