Red Fire Orchids (Pyrorchis nigricans), loved working on this watercolour commission. These orchids usually only flower after a fire & they don't need pollination from other flowers to reproduce, amazing! #orchid #botanicalart #watercolour #botanicalpainting

Some figs have evolved to rely on humans and done away with the fig wasp pollination altogether!

“If the bees disappear off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.”

Ours blooms several times a year but the bloom does only last 10hrs.

Amazing to smell too. These are clones, I need an outside one for pollination and fruit.

I, a biologist, do my best to understand the connections among inflation, employment, interest rates, debt, and bond markets.

In my experience economists do not do the same with CO2 levels, ocean acidification, falling fish stocks, temperature, pollination failures, and resulting social conflict.
Scolding climate advocates for ignoring economic analysis is counterproductive: our analyses don’t capture the costs and benefits they care about. We should push for more cost-benefit thinking from a place of humility about what we can and can’t deliver: www.theargumentmag.com/p/what-econo...

fig wasps love their suicide pollination

honor their last wishes, eat the fruit of sin

Entomologist barging in: good news! Nearly all figs eaten by humans today* are from are parthenocarpic strains; that includes the ones that go into Fig Newtons. They do not need the wasps to make fruit.
(*Unless you are eating a Smyrna fig, which still needs pollination by wasps.)

We need bees for honey and to help with pollination of flowers so we MUST protect the bees 💯

Well, you see...

The thing with boots. They're uh... a lot like tulips. They need pollination.

Like a flower blossoming when the conditions are ideal for pollination~

Adults are losing functional distinctiveness everywhere. Mountain communities are losing their ecological uniqueness — with potential consequences for ecosystem stability and pollination networks.

We do have a wildflower season, in Perth that is best June-October. Bird pollination is quite a feature of the flora, but there are other intricate pollination partnerships going on.

Examples of negative externalities:
- carbon pollution
- antibiotic resistance
- congestion

Examples of positive externalities:
- herd immunity from vaccination
- pollination from beekeeping
- the worst video game of all time giving us k/da

The relationship between bats & plants goes beyond pollination. In the Tropics, bats are critical seed dispersers. If you like lychees, longans & mangoes, thank the bats, which are the dispersers of the wild ancestors of these crops. 📷: Litchi chinensis #batweek #Sapindaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱🦇

any sort of pollination mimicry... Wild gingers, for example.

But interestingly not that different from modern fundamentalist strains in *other* religions

The common structural push of capitalist modernity + organizational/discursive cross-pollination has produced strikingly similar movements in most other major religions, though their strength seems to vary
One thing I’ve really learned from the various lectures about early christianity from Bart Ehrman via the Great Courses is how truly an outlier modern political evangelical Christianity is compared with other strands of Christian theology and thought
it's very important to remember that the fundamentalist expression of evangelicalism, while politically ascendent, is still the marginal group by comparison to the seeker-sensitive moderate evangelical majority

they still vote red, largely, but their expression is very diff. from fundamentalism!

Have a Hoverfly for
#FlyDay. I just went up the garden to replenish the bird feeders and spotted this little yellow stripey chap on the red Persicaria aka "Kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate".

There is a lot of weird cross pollination in WA 3 with Texan politics/big money (a la Maddox)

That Braun and RWC share a Treasurer, who may have hired a text client to do shady anti-trans scares should be more surprising than it is. That crew has no problem repeatedly demonizing children.

Things that really bother me: people pushing "save the bees" movements that only care about the survival and proliferation of commercial swarms of European honey bees used for pollination in agricorp. European honey bees are not in much danger. All the solitary bees they outcompete are.
