Having seen the Joyce Carol Oates very bad, not good tweet about romance and AI, I can't help thinking about the way that romance has been treated as a punching bag for so long and always by people who are completely unwilling to engage with the genre and know little about it.

New gentoo penguin species discovered by US and Chilean experts
Southeastern gentoo penguin look almost identical to other gentoo penguins, so until recently experts thought they were all the same species.

A small quality-of-life thing I recently discovered is that if there is some artwork you really like or some photos that make you happy you can get them printed as a custom calendar (there are several print sites that do this) and every month a lovely new bit of joy is there for you on your wall.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I've talked to a few journal editors who are concerned about similar problems re: anonymous reviewers. If a peer reviewer wants a little help & feeds your unpublished submission into an AI system, they've just shared your proprietary work & broken confidentiality. A nightmare to think about
Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

An expert at the University of Copenhagen said his team had been sharing its research with the company’s A.I. model, Claude, and that its new finding matched their work.

(this is, of course, also why "it's fine to use 'AI' to generate text/images/etc. as long as a human checks the output" is not a workable position. the human "checking the output" is highly likely to be unconsciously biased toward uncritically accepting the computer's output!)
This is consistent with a phenomenon researchers have documented in other contexts, namely that people believe computers even when the clear physical evidence in front of their eyes contradicts the computer. privacysos.org/blog/bias-al...
