More than a decade ago, I found a carnival in Vienna lit with strings of colored bulbs.
It was open but nearly empty. No music played from any of the rides. It should have felt haunting. Instead, it felt like a place slightly out of time.

I’d heard more praise for this book than almost any other, and Kelsier drew me in almost immediately. The sensory differences between the metals made the magic system feel especially vivid, even in busy scenes. That was where Sanderson’s work shined through.

The mist gave her a heady nausea as she approached the stronghold. A low growl came from the blackberry brambles to her right. Many eyes shone blue in the dim light. Her horse stepped back. She unslung her bow and nocked an arrow. Why had she continued alone? A massive beak parted the thorns.
