A decade ago, I found an empty, lit carnival in Vienna, strangely suspended in time.

That same quiet strangeness lives in the book I'm writing: an ancient crow, an untrained mage & a soul bond that could save her town or expose her to whatever is ravaging it.

I don’t like borrowing much for the sole reason that I like to write and underline in my books and then hoard them like a dragon 🥺👉👈

I don’t even like giving away books I didn’t enjoy because what if I change my mind 🫣

I buy, oh lord help me, borrowing? If I like the book and I have to give it back? I get a little bit Genghis Khan.

We're thrilled to reveal the cover for A SPOONFUL OF TROUBLE by @tkingfisher.com, the tale of a princess who decides to take fate into her own hands with the help of a goddess, a goat, and a healthy dose of self-confidence.

More than a decade ago, I found a carnival in Vienna lit with strings of colored bulbs.

It was open but nearly empty. No music played from any of the rides. It should have felt haunting. Instead, it felt like a place slightly out of time.

What fantasy book has a morally complicated character you couldn’t help rooting for?

For me, it’s Vicious by V.E. Schwab. Characters like Victor Vale are why I write. Hi, I’m E.V. Caldwell, and I write about an ancient crow and an untrained mage who’ve both made damaging choices.

Mistborn: The Final Empire

I’d heard more praise for this book than almost any other, and Kelsier drew me in almost immediately. The sensory differences between the metals made the magic system feel especially vivid, even in busy scenes. That was where Sanderson’s work shined through.

The mist gave her a heady nausea as she approached the stronghold. A low growl came from the blackberry brambles to her right. Many eyes shone blue in the dim light. Her horse stepped back. She unslung her bow and nocked an arrow. Why had she continued alone? A massive beak parted the thorns.

Being a writer has completely changed the way I read. Half of me is enjoying the story. The other half is quietly studying how the author pulled it off.

Every book you read can teach you something about the writer you want to become.
