It’s the legendary badger vs baboon rumble, except (and we’ve checked with experts) there are no wild baboons in Latvia.
Badger vs. hedgehog brawl results in police action in Aizpute, Latvia
On the night of Saturday, 26 September, the South Kurzeme District Municipal Police received an unusual call from Aizpute, where the residents of a block of flats had had their night’s sleep disturbed...

Thing is... these things were extremely time sensitive & human beings were solving them in a matter of hours. If they couldn't be cracked in that timeframe & codes reset they moved on. So 2 days isn't great really (Not to mention it has access to all the breakthroughs from Bletchley & Poznan etc)

Working down near the convention centre, an absolute highlight of my calendar is the citizenship ceremonies. It cannot be understated how much it means to these people, who live and work and have fun beside us, to get to call Ireland home. If we freeze them out, we will be hurting ourselves.
"We're trying to is restrain the level of growth in that number"

Justice minister Jim O'Callaghan has said new citizenship rules are aimed at bringing down the number of people granted citizenship each year.

When the mist comes down BenBulben often disappears completely.
One day a couple of MAGA hatted tourists asked

*Excuse me Ma'am do you happen to know where BenBulben is? It should be here*

So I go *oh well they take it down at the end of the summer*

*Oh I see, thank you* and went on their way

Two details stood out to me in this online exhibition, both from Curraghmore House in Waterford around 1900/1910: an invalid carriage with a reclining occupant, and footmen with what looks like powdered hair, which I had thought was long gone by that time.

What were the real medicinal effects of classical Silphium? I find it hard to believe that a herb widely used in cooking could also have such dramatic medicinal effects as sometimes described. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silphium

First up is the rusty-spotted cat! 🐈

This is the smallest cat in the world - about half the size of the average domestic cat. It really is just a baby, and for that, we’re giving it a 10/10.

Make Ireland spongy again.
This summer has made it abundantly clear that we need rewetting across all landscapes, varied habitats, firebreaks and a recalibration of what we use water for, and in ireland, a massive growth and restoration of our degraded ecosystems like bog and wet woodlands that are naturally fire resistant

I won a copy of a book about Caravaggio in a competition. The author called him just 'M' the whole way through. 'M did this.' 'They watched M'. My reading snagged on it every time and I gave up after 2 pages.
Opening up a judgement free zone but what's the smallest thing that discouraged you from entering into a vast cultural landscape that others have found vastly rewarding.

Mine was discovering that the hero/protagonist of Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash was called Hiro Protagonist.

Who would win? An armed, internationally wanted hitman or Irish people's complete and utter disregard for the rules of the road
I thought this shit only happened in films. "When gardaí arrived on the scene of the crash involving three vehicles ... the dead man was found slumped in the passenger seat of one of the cars. He was wearing a balaclava and carrying a Sig semi-automatic handgun."

A fascinating thread about Erich Wolfgang Korngold and his music.
🧵
Composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold was BOTD in 1897 (d. 1957) in what is now the Czech Republic.
Few composers (some would argue none) influenced the art of the Hollywood film score both at its beginning, and again, decades after his passing, as profoundly as Korngold.

I never knew which way was up with the Union flag. From this thread, since the Scottish union came first (1707) the white cross of St. Andrew should be above the red cross of St. Patrick on the flagpole side, as this shows seniority. Odd as it is, that explanation is one that will stick in my mind.

One thing I notice about "ultra-processed food" claims is that dairy in the NOVA definition is at the low end (milk-"minimally processed"; cheese-"processed"), while almost any fancy vegan product will be "ultra-processed". I've a sneaking suspicion that there's some dairy money floating around here
Reminder that there is no scientific definition for "ultra-processed food", and no theory for the mechanism by which it is supposedly uniquely harmful.

Increasing your daily consumption of ultraprocessed foods by 10% — basically the equivalent of a small bag of potato chips — may raise your risk of dementia even if you normally eat a healthy plant-rich diet, according to a new study. https://cnn.it/4n0zNR6
