Tree of the Month for Oct' 26: Wild Service Tree, but do we have any in Exmouth? That’s where YOU come in 🧐
Its leaves are glossy green and can look like plane / maple, but the lower lobes are quite distinct to the upper ones. There may be some fruit on it, which look like large brown rowan berries.

Tree of the Month, Sep' 2026: Orange-berried Whitebeam? (Sorbus croceocarpa*). Nobody seems entirely sure of this species' origin, but this specimen on Summer Lane was almost certainly ‘planted’ by a bird 🕊️💩
The record was first spotted in “A New Flora of Devon” see links in the comments, or on FB

Observed on Hazel leaves at Littleham churchyard yesterday - so presume Hazel Sawfly larvae (Craesus septentrionalis)?

Tree of the Month for May 2026: flowering now, a young Indian Horse-chestnut (Aesculus indica?) on Seymour Close.
From the Himalaya, flowering about a month later than our common horse chestnut, this species provides some extra food for pollinators during late-spring.
Are these Tree Bumblebees?

It's “Love Your Yew Week”, 9th - 15th Feb.
A few of us met with Shaun and Sue from Littleham Church to see their lovely yews.
The oldest is probably the one quite close to the SE corner of the church - our Tree of the Month for February.
It's 4.62m girth at 1.5m and could easily be 300 years old*

Tree of the Month for November 2025 - the “hungry” lime on Foxholes Hill*. And, as it’s a bit late, a word of the year “edaphoecotropism”. This is when a tree grows around or engulfs a foreign object - such as this old iron railing.

*Probably Common Lime (Tilia x europaea).

Belated Tree of the Month for July:
Is it a Hop?
Is it a Hornbeam?
No, it’s a Hop Hornbeam!
Botanical name Ostrya carpinifolia, a cousin of hornbeams, but not related to the hop - its fruits just look a bit hoppy. This young tree is near the Deaf Academy exit, but you can see it from the pavement.
