I make ontologies for the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. An odd job and not one I would have chosen for myself

It’s been pointed out that now I’ve renounced my Pants, Manchester title, my pinned post no longer makes sense. Here’s weeknotes instead. They occupy the liminal zone between parliamentary procedure & the semantic web. But are better than that makes them sound

I have purchased
the RAM
that was in

the supply chain

and which
you were probably
saving

for inference

Forgive me
it was gratuitous
so idle
and so scarce
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says having RAM in personal computers is a ‘terrible’ use of limited resources and that it would be better utilized in data centers

"From a global perspective it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their computer"

How on earth do we respond to the incoming AI tsunami?
Not really sure. We could just do what we always do?
Talk to people and understand the types of entities we’re dealing with and the relationships between them
Recognise that that will vary across interest groups

Double thumbs upping this one. What is an application but some data structures and some instructions for manipulating data structures. Separating data from application development makes as much sense as the old backend / front end split
One of the biggest mistakes the IT industry made was drawing "data" and "application" as two separate boxes on an architecture diagram. There is no application without the data, and the data is nothing without the application. They are one and the same thing. The result is organisational dysfunction

We’ve long marked up enabling powers in primary legislation, as part of the editorial process revising the legislation on legislation.gov.uk. We’ve also old powers data from the old ToGO. In recent times (the last year) , we’ve compiled and aim to maintain data about duties and powers generally.

I feel I should probably know this, being a secondary legislation kinda guy, but there is no actual register of powers delegated by Acts of Parliament to ministers? Is that true?
Geoff Mulgan knows where the levers are and is understandably annoyed that politicians don't - looks like a massive failure of training.
