Stop being so obsessed with surprising your players. Instead, get way into *having fun with them*
Alternately, let them have a session where they play out the events of the mystery as the involved parties and then have their super-sleuth PCs solve it next time!
Give them handouts with their temporary PC's objectives and motives, and let them set up the solve!
