🌼Summer Species Focus 🌼

Within the first few months of summer, you can expect to witness Briar (Dog) Roses in full bloom. This pretty, pink flower is a vigorous, commonplace shrub that can be found in hedgerows and woodland edges.

🪺NOW BREEDING🪺

Nightingales are now returning to the UK from Africa to breed over summer. The beautiful song of these night-singers have been known to inspire compositions by artists such as Beethoven and can be experienced in the woodland and scrub of southern and eastern England.

The Pasqueflower, Pulsatilla vulgaris or "common quiverer" belongs to the buttercup family and typically blooms around Easter. It is the county flower of both Herts and Cambs, eagerly blooming between the two counties on the well-drained chalky soil of Therfield Heath, a SSSI.

❗Early Spring Arrival Alert❗

Bumblebees are buzzing across the UK and are crucial agricultural pollinators. To maximise their chances of survival throughout their flight season, a continuous supply of nectar is vital and can be provided by plants flowering from late March such as bluebells.

The Minotaur beetle, primarily found in heathlands and unimproved pastures, play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by burying dung, which aerates the soil and adds organic material. This improves soil structure, enhances water retention and provides essential nutrients for plants.

Are you keeping dry this winter?

Wet weather is not only an iconic characteristic of Great Britain but is great for survival and reproduction in Grey Field Slugs. Hatchlings can cause significant damage to crops but can be managed by preserving their natural enemy habitat.

Red admirals can hang around until as late as Nov - some will even remain for the winter. In Sept they are still happily on the wing.

Hedgerow & fallen fruit is a great source of food during the autumn. Leaving ivy to flower also provides a good source of nectar when little else is flowering
