Today’s Autumn Arrival Spotlight... the Fieldfare! 🍒

Flocks arrive from Scandinavia, filling UK hedgerows and fields with their speckled breasts and blue-grey heads, feasting on berries and insects.

War on nature effectively being conducted by successive UK govts is working, with continued bird decline

Supplemented by recent avian flu in seabirds

Farmland bird decline owing to loss of mixed farming, increased pesticide & fertiliser use, removal of hedgerows

Red-backed Shrike showed well around the hedgerows in fields opposite @portlandbirdobs.bsky.social mid afternoon. Several Golden Plover and 2 Great Egrets seen at Lodmoor this am.

😷 Bit unwell, so early for #WildflowerHour to make me feel better! 🤧
08:30 this morning a tractor with flail was cutting back hedgerows in the lane outside.
Rosehip pic is from Oct 2024 as I’ve not been outside to see what’s left today 🍂🍄🐦‍⬛🪶🕊️💕

Everyone: plant fruit trees. Wherever you can: gardens, hedgerows, scrubland. Ten years from now we will need them

The house is surrounded on all sides by hedgerows.

Good morning from Vermont. 🍁

These are the in-between days, the true cusp of the season. Autumn is sidling through the branches and hedgerows, daily brushing more of her bronze and gold into the green. Every falling leaf, every misty morning, ushers summer just a little further along the lane.

In Ireland, nature, be it forests or hedgerows, are only deemed valuable once they're cut down. It's capitalism and neoliberalism at its finest.

Another great read from @aislinnkellyy.bsky.social!

Good morning. It’s another gorgeous country lane for you today. Deep sides are always the best sort. Live thinking about all the creatures living in the hedgerows.
Happy #humpday.

Early Autumn belongs to native Spindle 🧡
Its striking pink seed capsules are now beginning to split open, revealing bright orange seeds. Birds feast on the fruit and help disperse the seeds, spreading this beautiful native shrub through hedgerows, woodland edges and scrub. #FarnaghtWoodCoLeitrim

It's such a wonderful place. I love the way the footpath to it has become a processional way. I was there 3 weeks ago and the hedgerows were full of autumn bounty - hips, haws, blackberries, sloes and wonderful crab apple trees.
It felt like we were preparing to visit Mother Earth.

Terrible news 😢
Wild bird populations in the UK have fallen to their lowest level since records began, with nearly half of species in decline.
Farmland bird populations have decreased by 63% since 1970. The decline is due to changes in farming, increased pesticide use, & the removal of hedgerows.

Ivy flowers are opening now across British hedgerows and walls, their tiny greenish blooms often overlooked until you spot the insects swarming around them. For hungry wasps and flies in October, this late nectar is liquid gold.

I’ve been writing a short story

It’s mild folk horror. It is NOT sexy, not unless you get turned on by ancient hedgerows and curses.

You could advocate for supporting local farms that don't use pesticide (good for wildlife and the workers) and that have hedgerows and wildlife habitat. Wild Farm Alliance does a lot of great work related to creating wildlife habitat on farms.
