East Germany has a Western European mentality on communism, with quite a lot of Ostalgie, rather than the Polish mentality that communism is basically the Holocaust, which no Pole collaborated with and if you say otherwise you'll go to prison.

We're seeing this in Berlin right now, with people trying to wash the idea of expropriation without compensation as an understandable solution to the housing crisis rather than as an atrocity as anti-constitutional as (say) American Republican anti-14th amendment birthright citizenship arguments.

The Western European mentality that communism is a nice ideal that every under-30 person with a heart should aspire to but just doesn't work in practice is worse than the Eastern European or American mentality that it is an inherently genocidal ideology whose adherents are inherently suspect.

I mean really I think the vibecession is mostly explained by the pandemic causing a psychological reference point in the past for what prices "should be" in a way that has not been the case for any event since WW2

For some reason, I'll always defend this place, and I love it because it's not trying to be some awful attempt at trying to replicate historic train station designs poorly.
It's unashamedly modern, and it manages to pump trains through on multiple levels to the rest of the Bundesrepublik.

i've been thinking lately about how much giving someone a ride is the most underrated love language - picking up someone up from the airport, portaging children across town for soccer practice, whatever. It's implicitly a very loving and caring gesture to promise to get someone somewhere safely.

As I've said countless times before, pickup trucks are in the weird zone where they're large V8 vehicles with some cargo space that don't come across as "douchy" when compared to a BMW or Mercedes. And unlike a Mustang, your kids can fit in the back.

"You're coming get married within 90 days but not to immigrate but you'll adjust your status after you marry to become an immigrant but we won't process it within 90 days so you'll be here illegally but we won't count that as illegal and even let you work—unless we don't."
