It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that I’ve disliked enough to rant about it (offline). It’s well-written and a page turner but it has child torture, mass death of several different kinds, and worst of all, multi-page info dumps on irrelevant subjects. It got in my head. I’m sorry I read it.

I think the only rational explanation - I'm not saying it's non-evil, I'm saying it's rational - is that the market for fossil fuel collapsed, and data centers are just a whole new way to burn fossil fuel.
It makes far more sense that 'it's where they keep the magic computer superbrains'.
