Upjumped farmboy from Missouri. Ex-academic (*sigh*) and coming to terms with it. Still interested in volcanism of Earth, Venus, Mars, etc. #FirstGen. Do good recklessly. He/Him.

Nine years ago today I saw a BIG rock in Mexico that even had wispy steam emission from its summit, so you could say that was a good day.
The most important task when moving to a new place.

Have you ever seen rutilated #quartz? It's prized by jewelers for unique pendants and rings. Dazzling!

“Quartz stands as one of nature’s most versatile and enduring creations. With its simple chemical formula yet endless structural variations, it embodies both the beauty and complexity of Earth’s geology.”

You never forget your first. Quartz!

Quartz is a common mineral, with some very important and uncommon properties. One is piezoelectricity. When quartz is squeezed, it generates an electric charge. Together, quartz and earthquakes can promote the formation of gold nuggets, that can be quite large.

Again, I wish I was teaching geomorphology again. This would have been excellent to show during the mass wasting unit.
On 27 September 2026, a large landslide at Lete on the Kaligandaki River in Nepal was captured on a very good video.

I was cleaning out my closet before moving again, and I discovered that a mouse had eaten through the tam and hood from my PhD.

If that isn't emblematic of my academic career (and academia broadly?) and life right now, I don't know what is.

Anyway, I'm sad again.

#Quartz is very resistant to erosion. After all the other minerals erode away, white sand beaches remains. Quartz abides.

HiPOD: Dune Day in Schaeberle Crater

The light-colored, rough surface is covered with small impact craters, showing that this landscape has been exposed for a long time. The smooth, dark dunes were formed by wind-blown sand.

Scientific papers are not simply data repositories for AI agents to comb through. Scientists make informed choices about which data analysis techniques to use. You as the reader may not like those choices, but doing the analysis differently makes it a fundamentally different paper.
This is the future of scientific papers.

Instead of a PDF, the paper is an AI agent that you can talk to, ask questions, run analyses.

No more digging through supplements - just ask the paper directly: "what p-value cutoff was used in Fig 3B? Re-run at 0.01."
