Last week, government data showed that, under Lula, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon fell to its lowest level since records began in 1988.

During Bolsonaro’s term, deforestation rose almost 60%, equivalent to felling over a million trees per day. His son looked to follow a similar trajectory.
