Delighted to share that my second monograph, The Living Judas in Medieval Text and Image (working title), is now under contract with Cornell University Press @cornellupress.bsky.social! I am so grateful to @leverhulme.ac.uk & @paulmelloncentr.bsky.social for the time & support to work on this.

As a two-time alumnus of Edinburgh Uni, it's hard not to despair at the short-sighted plans by management to decimate degree programmes across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Solidarity to all affected by this act of utter vandalism.

The extent of the programmes being cut at the University of Edinburgh (where I took part in an event with Raja Shehadeh a fortnight ago) is extraordinary (archive.is/tACqv) - Celtic & Scottish Lit (UG), Scottish Literature (UG) & BD Divinity (UG) among the 90, not to mention Arabic & Persian.

With all of the emphasis on the Bayeux Tapestry this week, and with Rosh Hashanah about to start, it's reflecting that the world of William the Conqueror wasn't just a Christian one. The centuries before prior to 1066 had seen Jewish communities gradually expand North through Germany and France. 1/

My article 'Synagoga as Mother in Ekbert of Schönau's Stimulus amoris' is out now in JMRC 52.2, on a striking and influential medieval text that has gone understudied.

Edinburgh CRC MS 113, open at ff. 241v-242r. 'Synagoga as Mother in Ekbert of Schönau’s Stimulus amoris', abstract (and first page of PDF version): This article proposes that the (understudied) twelfth-century Stimulus amoris text, which notably describes Christ’s body as aborted matter from the womb of his mother Synagoga, was a key influence on later medieval devotional culture and its gendered anti-Judaism, and accordingly the article provides a close analysis of this striking passage. The article discusses the text’s usage of material from Isaiah, Job, and the Gospel of John, exploring the implications of each according to Christian typology and the supersession, and argues that Christ and Synagoga should in this way be recognized as an alternate, but equally important, form of the “Jesus as Mother” trope usually applied to Christ and Mary.

One in four academic history positions in post-92s are gone since 2019 alone. One in four. We don't have data for 2025-6 and I doubt it magically got better.

Post-92s have seen a 25% fall in the number of staff teaching history. 25% since 2018-19.

Changes in staffing vary considerably by institution / region. The period 2018/19 to 2024/25 has seen a 25% (200 FPE) decline in History staff in Post-92 institutions.

HESA regions with marked falls in staff for this period incl: South-East (-32%), East of England (-22%), Yorks & Humber (-18%) 2/3

Disability and Medieval Studies: Then and Now Presented by Alexandra R. A. Lee and Hope Doherty-Harrison Featuring Alicia Spencer-Hall, Matthew McCall, Edward Mills Amy Louise Morgan, E. R. P. Champion, and Jude Seal Released June 2026 Medievalists with Disabilities was founded in 2017. Since then, the organization has organized annual panels at the largest UK medieval conference, Leeds International Medieval Conference (Leeds IMC), and has just published an edited collection of essays from the first five roundtables: Towards an Accessible Academy: Perspectives from Disabled Medievalists. Contributors to Towards an Accessible Academy describe their lived experience of disability and how this intersects with the discipline of medieval studies, embracing both the challenges and the joy this can bring. This volume provides a unique perspective on the state of accessibility within the field and in the university environment more broadly. While offering real-life testimonies of disability in the academy, many chapters also include practical advice on best practices in supporting disabled scholars and students, as well as how the authors feel connected to the medieval sources they study. In this podcast episode, Dr. Alex R. A. Lee and Dr. Hope Doherty-Harrison chat with contributors to the volume, reflecting on individual experiences to which listeners may relate, sounding a call to action for all medievalists to actively practice allyship, and providing clear examples of how we might implement the advice given by contributors to improve the academy’s accessibility.
