learning that the whole “recycling plastic” concept as we understand it was an op funded by oil companies in the 70’s and 80’s as a way to kill any efforts which actually addresses the problem was a very sad day for me.
Fun fact: plastic recycling basically doesn't exist.
Only about 9% of all plastic ever made has been recycled, and only 1% more than once.

Regulations exist because the private sector has shown over and over and over again they will not self-police. Even WITH regulations they STILL act against the public interest, knowing they'll just have to pay a fine or whatever. All they care about is profit. Taking that away is the only path.

This is something you cannot repeat enough: what makes America so much more unequal than European countries isn't the wealth held by billionaires (Europe has those too). It is the wealth held by the upper echelon of the professional classes. Lawyers, doctors, even some journalists...
"These billionaires’ total estimated wealth is $8.4 trillion...An enormous number, but it’s less than five percent of total U.S. household wealth. By comparison, households in the 90th to 99th percentile of wealth (from $2 million to $11.5 million) have total wealth of $63.2 trillion! "
