This is like Niall Ferguson and his ‘six killer apps’ of history
Thank goodness Harari is coming to save history. I would never have known that history was ‘an open-ended process’ otherwise.

Did you know history has LAWS? (But is fluid and not causal. Take that, logic.)

"Evil Nazis" or "heroic freedom fighters"? Neither narrative tells the real story. The truth about Latvian soldiers in WWII is far more complex and human than led to believe.

Given we are approaching that time of the year, my big piece from years back on the 1983 Cold War Crisis (and the role of Stanislav Petrov in it) over onto authory as a free-to-read.

Over the years, the myth of what happened has been simplified. The reality was scarier.

Because: Ronald Reagan.
The Day the World Didn’t End
At the height of the Cold War, with alarms screaming, one Soviet officer stopped to think. It cost him his career. It may also have saved the world. The morning of the 26th September 1983 had started ...

Today marks the anniversary of the unveiling of the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on the Somme. A place and monument that I adore. Yet I am forever captivated by Vincent Scully’s description of Lutyens masterpiece in the NYT, in 1991:

I think Bluesky doesn't get just how many groups didn't migrate over. If you're even somewhat seriously in the OSINT space, you're stuck on twitter because of how few international communities moved over. This is an almost purely US-UK site.
The decision of so many people to keep using X in its race-war phase has made me a bit more cynical overall about the ability to draw moral red lines. It’s beyond disappointing.
