This is *the* main continuity between neo-fascism and the 20th Century variety.
Erich Fromm argued exactly this in "Escape From Freedom," saying that modernity left many alienated and socially dislocated--and fascist strongmen promised to restore meaning and purpose to their lives.

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

Find an explicitly left organizing project, not a "climate" one without clear politics. Look for an analysis of power, race, politics, and gender embedded in strategies you decide to join up with. These look different from "neutral" tech solution sets and will feel different to engage with.
