There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

Review of Veltheim 2018, 2019 and 2022: Australian Southern Brolga – Breeding Home Range Modelling and GPS Tracking #AUS
Why this review? The Endangered Australian Southern Brolga (Antigone rubicunda) is a problem for the wind industry because it impedes the rollout of wind farms across Western Victoria. Previous guidelines restrict wind farm development, but the Government now uses Veltheim et al 2019 as the reference standard for Brolga modelling. This review raises questions about the usefulness and relevance of Inka Veltheim’s work for that purpose. The Victorian Government and wind farm proponents claim Veltheim et al 2019 provides the . . .

Ranchers in the West have a history of violating grazing laws! Aka, Bundesliga are just one infamous family!
I never vote for ranchers in political offices!
Ranchers on the Santa Fe NF have a history of violating grazing regulations: allowing their cows to trespass into the Valles Caldera Preserve, overgrazing USFS allotments, failing to move livestock, and causing ongoing damage to riparian areas and critical habitat. More ➡️ https://loom.ly/e0gHQDE
Fences Down, Grazing Up, and Cows That Don’t Read Permits
The USDA wants more cattle and lighter enforcement on drought-stressed national forests. A family cabin and the Valles Caldera show what unenforced grazing limits cost.

Wind farm case in court #AUS
The Mortlake Community Alliance is taking legal action in the Victorian Supreme Court next month, to try to stop a proposed wind farm. The alliance is taking the action against state planning minister Sonya Kilkenny and energy company Woolnorth Renewables in an effort to stop the proposed Mount Fyans Wind Farm from going ahead. Court documents show the alliance is seeking a judicial review into the wind farm’s planning permit, which was issued by Ms Kilkenny in August 2025. The . . .

Amazing news, thanks to decades of unrelenting advocacy by the Yurok, Karuk and Klamath Tribes.

It’s heartening to see the collaborative nature of the salmon restoration effort reflected in this paper’s authorship, which includes all three Tribes, state & federal agencies, NGOs & private entities.
Chinook salmon have recolonised 88% of their historic range on the Klamath River, with more than 13,000 fish passing the old Iron Gate Dam site in 2025, up from 7,700 the year before. Two years after the dams’ removal, it’s going better than anyone predicted. buff.ly/pToC9gB

This article brings to mind a presentation I saw about a study on Hawks. They put a tracker on some, and found they went to same prairie dog colonies over thousands of miles year after year. When a colony was wiped out do to development, or shooters, they struggled to get to another colony. 😮‍💨
A recent review of 111 studies looked at the keystone effects of prairie dogs on grassland birds and found 105 different bird species documented using prairie dog towns in some capacity.

SoundSim360 long-distance low-frequency noise simulator #SWE
SoundSim360 is a high-fidelity acoustic simulation tool developed by SoundSim Technologies, based on more than 25 years of research in advanced numerical methods for wave-dominated partial differential equations. Unlike traditional noise modeling software that relies on simplified ray-tracing or parabolic equation (PE) methods, SoundSim360 uses state-of-the-art physics-based algorithms (SBP–SAT finite difference methods) combined with GPU acceleration to deliver both accuracy and speed. What it does Predicts sound propagation over long distances, where low-frequency noise dominates. Handles complex 3D environments including . . .

It was photographed earlier this month in the Trout Creek Mountains of Oregon.

This is also the landscape being considered for a new lithium mine.
