it adds like 20% extra effort and routinely catches both obvious bugs that'd have been embarrassing and really non-obvious, subtle things a human reviewer or single, cheap agent review probably wouldn't have caught at all. why would you not do it? it baffles me

Slowly coming around to believing SWE mgmt is 100x more broken than SWE
A major part of this is that we've been hiring developers based on whether they can do graph recursion instead of asking them questions like "how would you mentor someone?"
People complain that AI is destroying the Junior Dev to Senior Dev pipeline, but the problem is, there never *was* a pipeline! Senior devs were just those who could self-educate fast enough to not impinge on their seniors' time too much. There's no real structure to actually cultivate senior devs!

some variation of this is what im expecting. jevon's paradox is going to push a ton of people who dont think of themselves as SWEs into weird hybrid pseudo-SWE roles, but the <p50 SWE who just writes java and doesn't bring any product or business insights to the table is turbo-fucked
a smaller (than now) number of absurdly paid software veterans who know the insides of the algorithms, the models, the hardware, and know where the bodies are buried. They will be paid 7fig+
a vastly larger (way more than now) number of slop-cannons, -janitors, and -plumbers, paid fine: 50-100k

What's my advice, as An Old SWE, given <all this>?
As a Jr SWE, I think it is in fact, still useful to force yourself to learn good algorithms and data structures and how databases work (like really) and how to code an inverted index by hand and all Stuff Claude can just Do For You.

My impression is that AI coding is on a "pick two of three" triangle: scope, ship speed, and correctness. Small tools are (speed + correctness) fast prototypes are (speed + scope) and big projects are (scope + correctness). Every project that tries to be all three degrades to "fast prototype."

A new-grad SWE can now produce a much larger volume of artifacts but they are still, fundamentally, the products of a new-grad SWE.
Yeah it's possible people are largely spending their time learning about harness workflow development and stochastic prompting and agent management techniques in place of learning about software development, code architecture, etc.
