I study dark matter, cosmology, and particle physics for a living at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. On the weekends I write explainers about surprising places physics shows up in the natural world.

When I was a kid I used to have nightmares about giant beetles breaking in through the windows of my school cafeteria.

Today I am relieved to put those fears to rest: the laws of physics limit the maximum size insects can grow to.

Supernovae are violent explosions, spewing hot, radioactive material in the death throes of massive stars.

You might think life wouldn’t stand a chance against one. But it turns out life on Earth has withstood *multiple* nearby supernovae.

What guides a bat’s internal compass? It’s not the stars in the sky, or the Earth’s magnetic field. https://www.quantamagazine.org/how-animals-build-a-sense-of-direction-20260121/

Hot rocks can stay warm for ludicrous amounts of time—maybe you’ve seen that video of a guy who heats the interior of his truck by putting a rock in a fire and then moving it to his truck’s cabin.

Turns out the same physics keeps planets’ cores warm—even bodies as small as the moon!

An overlooked era of cosmology is stealing the show in the quest to understand the cosmos. I wrote about it and exciting implications for physics in The Conversation:

An overlooked era of cosmology is stealing the show in the quest to understand the cosmos
The early universe was kind of like a big game of musical chairs – scientists are figuring out how many particles were able to find ‘seats’ to understand the cosmos.

Heard a suggestion today to ask only for a researcher's top ~five most important publications as part of postdoc/faculty applications, to disincentivize cranking out as many LLM-assisted papers as possible. Apparently this strategy is gaining traction in Europe, US has yet to catch on. ⚛️🧪

What are the backgrounds for our event of interest LZ230616, and why can't they currently explain it? 🤔 A thread: 🧵

Neat little thread with lots of easy to understand language on the potentially exciting (yet, still to be very studied) #DarkMatter announcement from last night. 👇
Hopefully today you caught wind of the exciting possible dark matter detection at the LZ experiment.

But what’s dark matter again? What’s LZ? What does all of this mean???

One detail that seems to be escaping some of the coverage of the possible dark matter signal in LZ: the analysis they ran was not blind. They attempted to blind, but the procedure failed. This means there are fewer protections against investigator bias that could have crept into the analysis. ⚛️🧪
