Thinking back to this post and the recent surge in gas prices have convinced me this probably ain't feasible anymore (plus my Jag buyer ghosted anyway).

Probably do a hatch (or a hot hatch) and I can still get a kayak rack on top.

So I'm thinking about replacing my Jaguar, but I'm afraid my brain is too cooked to make any sensible choices. But when it comes to x-roaders, used Toyotas are too $$$ for their conditions and I just really don't want a Jeep. Plus I just like whatever it is that makes a Brit interior so...pleasant.
Discovery II. I'm pretty OK with going back in time to drive old tech. I dailied a Mach 1 for a while and aside from the shitty sound system it was fine. I really don't need that much, especially as long as I can mount my phone for maps and charge it through the cig lighter. Am I going to do that much off-roading? Probably not, but I want the option because I wanna do some trail seeking and camping out places. I also kinda wanna get more mechanical again and I think that'd come in spades on a D2. With that said finding competing opinions on the 4.0 vs the 4.6. The latter seems to solve most of it's issues with some rewiring and modding the engine to simply run cooler. The 4.0 seems to just need coolant, oil, and a careful eye on the headgasket, but apparently it's more an issue with OEM parts. The following for these is large so there seems to be a lot of improved parts. I've also been informed to avoid the sunroofs. The thing that intrigues me about LR's "softroaders" is that they're all apparently far more capable than anyone else's. The Disco Sport is just the continuation of the Freelander and has all the same gearing. I mean, a lift, a winch, some A/Ts, and that's probably gonna cover all the offroading I need, plus a nice roof rack for kayak and tent, and plenty of space in the boot for my work tools. And I think because they're smaller and more Freelander looking, I think these look better than the big boy Disco5s, which lost the plot. THough they do have all the hardcore offroad stuff, which I'll never use. And I'll be too tempted to make a mall crawler and all the Disco5 parts cost way more than the simple parts I'd get for this. All the Disco Sport needs really is a spare tire carrier on the butt. Early Freelanders seem great although the K-series Rover V6 seems a) kinda underpowered and b) not the most bullet proof. But the problems seem pretty vague and I've seen some people rip these through offroad obstacles, but they might've been using torquey Euro-market diesels. This is also the only picture representing an actual vehicle I've considered, though it's in WA state. But it's got the accoutrements, A-bar, rack, rock sliders (holy shit are these expensive), some armor, a skid plate. Plenty of space for lights and winch, and for a three door the rear space is fairly large. Plus the back roof comes off, and if I can find one there's a soft top I could use for the summer (maybe, I'd still have my work tools and I don't need someone slashing a soft top to take my power tools). I just think these are really neat. A soft roader, but I'm not looking to mud bathe or rock crawl. Just something a little better than any regular car. And unique. And rare. I do derive some pleasure from driving vehicle you just simply don't see too much of. Believe it or not, this is probably the most sensible option. The Discovery 3, or LR3 here in the states. The 4.4L V8s are apparently rock fucking solid, as are the transmissions. Plus they retain that beautiful offroad box shape. Interiors look decent, comfy seats. All the offroading gear you could need with the right options. Trick is to find an HSE with the locking diffs. These can also be found with relatively low miles and are rather cheap, but based on what I've heard and read 100k to 150k milers aren't a bad considerations. I've totally given up on finding a Tonga Green one as pictured. Everyone wanted this color, they're all clapped out or miled up. A green Land Rover is, simply iconic.

Hard to say, to some extent it was Dark Forces or Dark Forces II, and maybe to a much greater extent it was just Doom. I don't really call myself a gamer, though. There were a handful of formative games for me. I'd be remiss to not mention Zoo Tycoon and Operation Genesis. All very influential to me

A Ford Ranchero GT at the final 2026 Kim's Pizza car meet. A very, very clean looking example of a '70s Ranchero. I was always sort of amused that, save for the later Dodge Rampage, the American utes had these rather Mexicanish names. With that said, I think ute models from American makes survived for a longer time (past the 1980s) in some Central and South American markets. This isn't counting the Australian utes, of course.

A 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Indy Pace Car, or "Turbo Trans Am," at a 2026 Car Meet at Kim's Pizza in Wisconsin. This was supposed to be the final night of Kim's recurring car event for the year, featuring a food truck and a brewery, but bad weather post-poned it. Cars still showed up, and then virtually no one one showed up to the make-up day. Really sad. As for this car, this is a more rare version of the Turbo Trans Am because of cloth seats (most were optioned with leather), and the fact this very car was featured in the Indy 500's driver's parade, making this not just a replica, but a legit pace car (sort of, it wasn't used as a pace car in the race, just for the pre-race parade. But that's still pretty official).

Classic Corolla. The regular, common cars of an old era, I love seeing these pristine survivors. Sometimes more than the exotics and restored classics. These are the museum pieces that make you think "Wow, someone saved that thing."

Late '70s or very early '80s Toyota Corolla at the 2025 Okauchee Legion Park Car Show. This show if I recalled also featured some run of the mill '80s and '90s Chrysler cars in very pristine condition. With that said, these classic Corollas are going up in price, but make for very unique classics in a bland sea of restored Bel-Airs and Chevelles.
