Abstract: In contemporary debates on educational quality, learning outcomes are often framed in terms of measurable competences and performance indicators. However, this approach fails to identify reflexivity as a key learning outcome and a central transversal skill in today’s fast-changing and increasingly uncertain societies. Reflexivity is required for identifying and mobilising the knowledge and competences needed to reach one’s goals, and it necessitates understanding the surrounding opportunity structures. Further, we maintain that policy measures can impede or promote reflexivity, which is embedded in institutional arrangements and socio-spatial contexts. We explored 1) how young people in vulnerable situations displayed reflexivity in educational and school-to-work transitions and disruptions in differing regions in Austria, Finland, and Portugal, and 2) how their reflexivity was supported, ignored, or hindered by their lived experiences of educational and labour market policies and practices. The comparative design enabled examining how distinct transition regimes and socio-spatial configurations shape the development and limits of reflexivity. Our data consist of biographical narrative interviews with young people in vulnerable situations (N=67). From qualitative thematic analysis, three key themes emerged: 1) opportunities for reflexivity on educational pathways, 2) reflexivity on individual vulnerabilities, and 3) (lacking) institutional support for reflexivity.

Screenshot of the abstract: This paper explores how educational transitions among working-class students are constituted, mediated, and shaped by affectivity. Through in-depth qualitative research conducted in German and Austrian higher education, the study utilises biographical storytelling to prioritise the experiences of students navigating these transitions. Employing a relational lens informed by Bourdieusian sociology, the paper develops the concept of affective-habitual dispositions to illuminate how affects become sedimented within the habitus and shape educational trajectories. The analysis points to distinct affective practices permeating working-class students’ educational experiences: shame, melancholy, and joy contribute to the formation of affective-habitual dispositions, shaping how working-class students make sense of their pathways. By focusing on the often-neglected affective dimension of educational transitions, the study uncovers that affects are pivotal not only in perpetuating inequalities but also as transgressive forces that foster belonging. Ultimately, the conceptual insights derived from this study enhance a critical understanding of affectivity as both reproductive and transformative in relation to social inequality.

Screenshot wih the abstract "Summer temperatures will continue to rise in the next decades in all European cities and urban heat will become one of the top priorities with its manifold impacts on different social groups. In the context of climate change, urban design and planning processes, it is therefore crucial to consider individual adaptability and changes in living conditions due to urban heat stress. This paper focuses on the concept of heat-vulnerability and the question of how different people experiencing multiple vulnerabilities perceive, and adapt to heat stress. In our case study in Vienna in 2023, we conducted qualitative interviews and focus groups with heat-vulnerable people. After identifying eleven different factors of heat-vulnerability, the theoretical concept of multiple vulnerabilities provided insights into the intra- and interpersonal overlap of vulnerabilities on different dimensions: individual context, temporal characteristics, social and interpersonal factors, living and working conditions, and spatial factors. For most of the people involved in our sample, more than one factor was evident. Those multiple vulnerabilities demonstrate that factors can be seen both as a starting point of vulnerability and as an outcome of urban heat stress itself. Furthermore, the paper examines coping strategies of people experiencing multiple vulnerabilities, such as adjusting daily routines, utilizing nature-based solutions (NbS), and navigating infrastructural challenges. The study highlights the importance of the social construction of vulnerability, by urging that recognizing multiple vulnerabilities can enhance equity-focused responses to urban heat stress."
