Yes Margaret, the dates on the graph go from 1890 to 2000, but you'll notice the curve's lowest point and the plateau at the top happen between ~1910 and ~1940, so roughly 30 years.

D&D is mostly a combat system with poor mechanics for anything else; but most D&D players still do the ‘anything else’ for most of their sessions and it works fine! Mechanics dictate play, but also, it may be mechanics just don’t matter!
