It's time! My big old list of books read in 2026 begins here 🥰
Had to do a deep dive and steal someone else's photo, and I hope this is the right 'river' but here's a branch of the Embaras that's closest to my home:

I must have fallen asleep for every episode of Criminal Minds, season 9. I remember so very few of these episodes.

Unfortunately, the novelty/familiarity is a great combination for... Putting me to sleep 😅

I'm also over:

1. Having to deal with the administrative minutiae of elder care, in particular, the giant morass that ensues when your elder with dementia gets a traffic ticket, doesn't pay the fine, doesn't show up to court, and you would like to be able to drive their car when in town.

Things I am 100% over today - which are not (at least in this particular instance) connected, but also, kind of are connected, aren't they?:

1. Teenagers dying by suicide

2. Mean girls

If your kid is deliberately excluding someone - group chat, photo app only iPhone users can get - they suck.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

Every story I read about Dolly Parton has me thinking about how we used to tell Chuck Norris jokes as a way of mythologizing his strength.

The Dolly stories are like that, but instead it's kindness.

New study just dropped linking shingles reactivation and dementia risk.

You know what reactivates shingles? Covid.

Want to avoid it? Wear a well fitted respirator and give yourself the best odds of avoiding Covid infection.

There’s also a shingles vaccine which may help reduce risk!

This is a good day to contact your WA State reps and ask that they reinstate funding for Imagination Library. The headline here reads poorly, but it was funded for one more year (through this year): www.kuow.org/music/2025-0... ... but we only keep it if we ask.

Theobros and right wing culture warriors constantly complain that "America hates white Christians" but idk man, I'm watching an entire nation mourn Dolly right now. Maybe people just can't stand YOU

I know it’s hard to watch all these beautiful things be carried away by time and see the wrong things growing in their place. But listen. Listen. We have to be the beautiful things now. It has to be us. It has to be us. Courage.

Sometimes, when someone dies, what helps me is thinking about how wonderful it is that they were even alive in the first place.

Dolly was the closest you could get to an American saint. We all loved her.

She also really debunks the common justifications about religion, region, and age. Your grandparents and parents have shitty values because they have shitty values, not because of anything else. They could do better. Anyone can use their eyes to see the world and have the correct read.
What Dolly taught us is that it is in fact possible to be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams of avarice but still be a fundamentally good person with a strong moral compass, and the only reason more rich people aren't like that is because they don't want to be.

I think the thing about Dolly that we all respond to is that she knew her own worth, but she didn't think she was better than anyone (at least not publicly). She believed us all, herself included, to be beloved children of her God and she acted accordingly.

Weird how "Don't speak ill of the dead" is unnecessary when there's simply no ill anyone wishes to speak of

must-read
A sad-off is when you go back and forth playing sadder and sadder songs at full blast until you’re both too inconsolable to play another.

Dolly Parton’s “Down from Dover” won the whole tournament.

One of the most light-hearted people to ever live gave us the saddest song in the world. Thank you.

They were right about it being packed. I arrived late and had to camp outside where you can't hear the lecture - standing room only. Good for them (weird for me having to bother randos to try to find a seat because I have blood today and don't want to stand, though I'm not sure 88 degrees is great)
IDK if anyone else I know is going to this, but I thought I'd check it out. I stopped by the brewery while out walking the B-G this weekend and remembered how much I enjoyed it. And y'all know I like to nerd out, so...
Smarty Pints! Coming up on Monday, July 20th!

We’re going to learn about local geology, and we’re going to dissect a mosquito!

Get here early to make sure you get a seat. Gonna be packed!

(Also - get a drink! That’s how we pay rent! We have plenty of NA options!)

For an extrovert with a large roster of friends, I sure wind up going to things solo far more than I want to.

I guess it's good I learned the skill of book reading in public to make it feel slightly less awkward. But only slightly...
