NEW PREPRINT: You may recall Joshua trees started flowering fully four months early this year. Was that due to climate change? Well, @colincarlson.bsky.social and I called in Chris Callahan to formally test that hypothesis, and the answer is... it probably wasn't!

The Trump regime is redefining the Endangered Species Act to consider only the intentional killing of endangered animals to be illegal, removing accountability for incidental harm caused by economic activities. Psychopaths.

Oh, Annie Dillard. ❤️‍🔥

"At a certain point you say to the woods, to the sea, to the mountains, the world, Now I am ready. Now I will stop and be wholly attentive. You empty yourself & wait, listening. After a time you hear it: there is nothing there. There is nothing but those things only,

I am suing the NIH.

As part of a class action with the ACLU and 16 other plaintiffs, we are challenging the thousands of unlawful grant terminations in an effort to get them all reinstated.

Whatever happens, at the very least, no one can say I sat back and watched while they destroyed science.

NYC doesn't get a pass for this either incidentally. my neighborhood only sees occasional chopper traffic but shakespeare in the park now features dozens of helicopters ferrying fuckheads to the hamptons at every performance

glendale/burbank PD would have their chopper out every day for hours, circling above residential areas. it drove me genuinely out of my mind. we moved to a different part of town trying to get away from it, to no avail

Assuming Dems take back the House, the impeachment of Trump still should be on the table, but impeaching Kennedy, Hegseth, and Vought should definitely happen–and it will really put Republicans in a bind.
BREAKING: The House is going home again—this time to avoid a vote on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s impeachment.

US policymakers must avoid the temptation to rebuild US science by mimicking China and going all in on STEM. That would be a mistake. We also need social science and humanities that makes sense of great technological change like AI. Thats part of US scientific tradition worth keeping.

"all carbon dioxides"
The US EPA everyone! Emissions from power generation accounts for 25% to 30% of US GHG emissions. Models show that greenhouse gas emissions cause climate change. And, if all 'carbon dioxides' were indeed eliminated tomorrow, the Earth would rapidly turn into a snowball. www.epa.gov/newsreleases...
