Irish solar PV generation seems to have come on a long way! It's servicing a good fraction of the national electricity demand right now.

10 countries possess nuclear weapons.
3 are either threatening to, or actually are, carrying out genocides.
A 4th runs a mass concentration camp system.
A 5th has engineered a man made famine against its own people & jails people for 3 generations.

I think I reached a new level in Aliexpress packing recursion today: an item in a bubble wrap bag, in a cardboard box, in a bubble envelope, in a packing plastic bag (with address labels etc), in a outer plastic bag (with address labels etc). I might be missing a level.

Parkside/Lidl 20V battery to USB-C PD adapter from Aliexpress lasted half a second before a capacitor exploded. Bad luck or poor design? Don't know. In the queue for repair and we'll see how it fares with new caps. I wish Parkside would make an official USB-PD adapter for their battery packs :/

My little vibe code project for today. Efficient EO product download where your AOI runs along a network of LineStrings and the provider allows only 'simple' polygons w/o holes. Solution: auto cut little channels so that the AOI polygon becomes technically simply connected.

I lost my #GoPro #MAX2 lens cap, so I 3D printed a new one. Just a cylinder with a cap, but does the job. OpenSCAD script:
$fn=120;
H=14; D=32-0.2; // -0.2mm for tightness
difference() {
cylinder (d=D+2.0,h=H);
translate([0,0,2]) cylinder (d=D,h=H);
}

I bought myself a silicon wafer on a whim. No idea what these ICs do. Looks like each has one rather large pad, maybe for a RFID antenna?

This is cool. Some of the more famous vector graphics arcade games 1977 - 1985. I remember playing some of these. Vector graphics (where the cathode ray beam traces polygons and characters) was quickly replaced by the now ubiquitous raster graphics from mid 1980s on. www.youtube.com/watch?v=swry...

I need a SpaceX/Starlink expert to fact-check me.

Starlink loses a 1-2 satellites of the 8,800+ currently in orbit on a regular day. Once they hit their target of 42,000 they'll be losing 5-10 a day or ~2000-3600 a year?

A drone image I acquired earlier today (2025-11-06) while trying out some experimental survey equipment near Menlo just north of #Galway city. In foreground is Menlo Castle (in ruins) and the Corrib River. University of Galway campus and Galway city is in the back ground.

I was looking through some night time photos from the International Space Station (ISS) recently. This image from 2022 caught my eye: what (I think) you can see here is the phased transition from the old sodium vapor street lamps (orange) to LEDs (white). Image ISS066-E-122202

I recall as an student at UoG (then UCG) in the 1990s there were two research turbines at the engineering building at Nuns Island using the canal waters as a power source. Seems we have come full circle.
