Once ran restaurants. Now I hike, take photos, write, and make art in the wild pockets of the world. Mushrooms, mountains, and the spaces in between.

I build things, too. Skyvibe Weather, now on iOS: skyvibewx.com
Ptarmigan Ridge Trail, seen here in the distance, is one of my all time favorite hikes. Looking forward to getting back up there in a few weeks when the fall colors make the landscape look almost surreal.

A stunning view from Iceberg Lake this week. I could have sat and watched the clouds all day, and nearly did.

The Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is looking quite nice this time of year. Crisp air and subtle color changes made for a beautiful hike this week.

Soaking up the fleeting September light in the mountains while the weather cooperates. 🏔️☀️🌲

#WaterfallWednesday, with a little extra scenery thrown in. I spent the day yesterday soaking up September in the North Cascades, and it couldn't have been a more perfect day.

Looking out across the Salish Sea from Goose Rock on Whidbey Island, with late-summer grasses underfoot and a whole collection of clouds drifting through a ridiculously blue sky.

I'm always fascinated by the many small islands here in Washington, and this one in particular always catches my eye when I hike Goose Rock.

I'm actually moving to Camano Island next month, so I'm really excited about all of the new photo opportunities.

It's September, and that means we're heading into mushroom season. This little fungi was a nice find after some much needed rain last week.

Pacific Northwest forests have a way of making scale feel completely different. Ferns and moss at your feet, old trunks rising straight through the canopy, and just enough light filtering in to show how dense everything really is.

One of those coastlines that gets better the longer you look at it. Dark evergreens crowding the bluff, weathered rock dropping into the water, mountains stretched across the horizon, and clouds rolling in with that muted coastal light settling over everything.

The sandstone at Larrabee State Park might be more interesting up close than the big coastal views. Layers of rock worn into honeycombs, cavities, and smooth flowing shapes by a very long conversation with the sea.

There are plenty of reasons to hike in the North Cascades, but views like this make a pretty convincing argument all by themselves.

A firey sunset makes for a beautiful #Stunday. I can't believe how quickly the sun is starting to set earlier and earlier, so I'm savoring the sunsets while I can.

Summer in the mountains doesn’t get much better than this. Forested valleys, rugged ridgelines, lingering snow, and clouds rolling through a bright blue sky.

The warm summer days in the valley are rapidly winding down and I have mixed feelings about that. Is it just me, or is it crazy that we're only a few days away from September already?

A house on the rocks, a boat at the dock, thick forest rising behind it, and a foggy shoreline fading into the distance. I always find this house fascinating when I hike past it.

Mount Baker spent most of the morning negotiating with the clouds. Every so often the summit would begin to appear, but the mountain was shy and settled on wearing a cloud hat the entire time I was up there.

Something different today highlighting some #chaos for #BlueSkyArtShow. When I'm not taking photos of nature, I like to experiment with smoke. Constantly changing, and no two moments are ever the same.

This is the kind of forest that makes “green” feel wildly inadequate. Moss, ferns, cedar, fir, maple, all layered together from the riverbank to the mountainside.

At first glance, you might call this a bee or wasp. Look closer and the disguise starts to fall apart. This is a hoverfly, a harmless pollinator with huge compound eyes, a single pair of wings and some remarkably convincing yellow-and-black mimicry.

#WaterfallWednesday Oregon coast edition. Not exactly the traditional version, but when the Pacific comes crashing over the rocks and pours back toward the sea in a hundred little cascades, I think it counts.
