I’ll always remember in October 2001, in the Wanut Creek Barnes & Noble, an older brown-skinned man was having a conversation about the history of America’s interventions in the Middle East, and the middle-aged white man who started screaming at him so hard his face went beet red.
There are already articles circulating trying to rewrite history and say America was great after 9/11 and united and thoughtful and just a reminder that that period was marked by intense and insanely racist hatred, paranoia, and a frothing desire for unhinged violence and oppression.

The California water rights system is basically a 19thcentury legal seance that we continue conducting while pretending the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta isn’t an ecological system screaming from the constant stress from pumping, drought, and development, not to mention all the alfalfa grown for cows
One of my biggest pet peeves is anti-AI folks defending almonds and beef from the standpoint that "you need food to live"
even if AI never entered the equation, we were going to have to have a serious conversation about how unsustainable some of our food production is, and this mentality SUCKS

I love re-upping this: for decades the main library at UCLA had the generic name University Research Library because the person most responsible for getting it built was an English professor named Hugh G. Dick and the university refused to name it after him.
