If you feel the need to follow up a post with "Yes, I know this is AI," as though you're acknowledging that AI is a bad thing (which it is, and nice of you to catch up), maybe don't make the post in the first place.

This is a sub-skeet.

Related to this, I gave a recent lesson on rejecting the notion of "geniuses," and I worried that I might be tarred and feathered by a bunch of HS sophomores with G/T labels.

It will be worth it, they're great kids, but it was a rough day.
like I suspect many of you on This Website, I think a core reason why I find Eliezer Yudkowsky and his rationalist and effective altruist satellites so intensely annoying is because I had a VERY similar “being a super weird, pretentious, hyper-literate kid” experience - I just, you know, grew up.

The class that is currently reading Richard III and listening to me rant about the differences between OE and EM will be reading excerpts from Maria's translation of Beowulf in the next unit, because it's the kind of course where I get to do whatever I want.
Ask me how many times people who hear that I translated an Old English epic have insisted that Old English is just Shakespeare (whose plays are written in Early Modern English.) Note: someone just screwed up, it's not gonna be in Old English, folks.

Students at the high school where I teach are circulating a petition to stop the use of generative AI by staff at all levels of the district, demanding actual human work for actual human kids.

I have so much hope for the future. The kids are alright.

Just sprained my eyeballs from rolling them so hard.
Robert Eggers is set to direct a new film adaptation of ‘ROMEO AND JULIET’.

The film will feature the actors speaking in Olde English.

It turns out that "CHECK OUT THE BRAINS ON BRETT!" is in fact an anatomically accurate thing to say. Well played, Tarantino in 1994.

I saw Spin Doctors, Blues Traveler, and Gin Blossoms a couple of nights ago, and at one point Chris Barron said how ridiculous it seemed that any of them were doing adult things 35 years ago. I agreed wholeheartedly.

Also, for a bunch of old folks, we were a great-looking crowd, too.
I'm at the Sleater-Kinney/Liz Phair show in Prospect Park and I swear every single person I ever met or even knew about when I was young & going to shows is here, and all of us are old now, and there is no way to make this sound sincere but I really do mean it: my god we all look so much better now

anyway it is actually very fun to have kids deeply interested in the world around them and the people who live in it

Seriously, people. Conspiracy theory inevitably collapses under its own weight.
For the love of god please stop saying he’s dead, people. I can’t take it anymore

Hey, easy there, hoss, I think it's safe to say the people of Kentucky haven't been properly represented in decades, and not just due to this geezer. Let's just get some perspective, is all.

Oh wow, this sorts for me and my daughter as well, for both Civil Rights Acts. And the Bay of Pigs. And the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album. And SPARTACUS.

I need to lie down.
So my 3 year old daughter’s birth date was farther from 9/11/01 than my own birth date was from the passage of the Civil Rights Act

Reacher: Judging by the gray in your beard, I'd say you still have fond memories of MySpace.

Me: Now listen, this doesn't have to--

Reacher: It's possible you even remember your ICQ handle.
me: hey, aren't you jack reacher?

reacher: poster. mid-tier, by the look of it. you were on twitter until it became x. now you're just on one of the knockoffs, most likely bluesky, because you don't have the self-confidence for instagram or tiktok.

me: ok t—

reacher: peaked in the buzzfeed era.

Don't make me tap the sign again.

*taps sign*

The Sign: No instructional method is a panacea. I don't hunt werewolves, I teach high school, so stop trying to sell me silver bullets.
It's not enough for a movement to just say "Look, explicit instruction is important to understand and have in your toolkit" (Which it is! I'm not anti-instruction!), a movement needs a bogeyman to align itself and its followers *against*.
It is literally written into government policy in many American states AND national policy of many countries!

This is the most wonderful thing I've seen today.

A while ago my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the worrying weeks dragged on my dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time & inhabiting art's most iconic scenes. What he produced (& how quickly) was phenomenal...

I love this: "My IQ is no."
Anyway, these days, my score on an IQ test would be "lol, I'm not taking that, dude." However smart I am, it's smart enough for my purposes.

I came downtown tonight to investigate the house music, um, festival in the local park from the cover of the bar across the street. There is in fact very loud, bass-driven music playing for the three people in the park, while Janis Joplin is on the bar's speakers.

Gotta love the can-do attitude.
