Am feeling quietly optimistic by the rise of Burnham and the sliding of Reform. Burnham’s bounce will likely come to a very sobering end once reality hits, but hopefully enough goodwill will remain.

Can you imagine how much of a story it would have been if Reform had won the Manchester mayoral contest. And for a while it looked not only possible but in some ways probable looking at the polls a few months back. And yet they were trounced. They got nowhere near. That should be a big story.

This would happen on the BBC in the 80s & 90s: the subtitles were for whatever was showing in London, regardless of what was on in Scotland. I saw an episode of the Gaelic soap MACHAIR with Ceefax subtitles for Star Trek: TNG. Old Mrs MacIver, worrying about Romulan manoeuvres near the Neutral Zone
