Country rube stuff 101: if they talk fast, they got their hands in your pocket.
Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Returning to this thread with the latest Patreon-only ep of @inbedwiththeright.bsky.social and it hit me that there is a very obvious way to further "restorative justice" for the victim at Cornell that goes after systems and culture rather than individuals and it is banning frats on campus.
Not to insomnia-weigh-in on the concept of restorative justice, but I thought long and hard ten years ago about what I would say if someone asked what Alex Kozinski could do by way of restorative justice.

(Nobody ever asked.)

What everyone has to prepare for is the constitutional crisis to accelerate if the Democrats take the House and the Senate. Vought has been allowed by the Republicans to act with impunity, so have he will continue to ignore Congress. This is why you have to impeach him immediately.
Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.
The fiscal year is over.

The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years.

When my father was faculty at Cornell he was stopped by the police chief in the street & asked who he was & where he was going. When he balked at the fact that no one but him, an Arab man, was being asked, the chief said “I’m just protecting students”

Same guy failed to investigate 7 rapists.

If you’ve read about TN this week, please take a moment with this piece if you didn’t read it when we published it:

It’s an investigation into the execution team Alabama has put together.

It’s officers with a history of violence who choose each other. Eye-opening to what happens in executions.
In Alabama, Prison Guards Accused of Violence and Misconduct Carry Out Secretive Executions - Bolts
As Alabama keeps details around the death penalty hidden, an investigation into its execution team raises questions about how incarcerated people are treated in their final moments.

GOP ads right now are all about attacking trans people. Over, and over, and over.

I was a gay teen in 2004 watching the Bush campaign try to win on attacking gay marriage, but the resort to this hate drive in campaign ads feels so dialed up now. I can’t imagine being an lgbt kid watching tv today.

Restorative justice doesn't mean "nothing bad ever happens to you."

It means, "in determining what happens from here on out, we center the needs of your victim to repair what happened to them over your own needs."

If I’m reading this right, Anthropic has no choice but to IPO now because it doesn’t have the money to cover its computing / infrastructure obligations next year
Anthropic's IPO prospectus shows sweeping AI vision, surging costs. But the cost to get there will be staggering. Anthropic reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming year.

This point, from my recent interview with @perrybaconjr.bsky.social for TNR, is so crucial. Trans people are desperate for relief from the relentless Republican attacks impacting all of us.

When Democrats move right, they signal relief may not be coming, and that engenders a lot of despair.

the truly crazy making part of all of this is that voter fraud EFFECTIVELY DOES NOT EXIST. you have a better chance of finding an actual leprechaun at the end of the rainbow than of finding evidence of voter fraud that influences an election
Genuinely an insane paragraph from Sam Alito. “Voter fraud is real and scary and we have to stop it, so the fact that implementing Trump’s mail ballot rule will disenfranchise millions is legally irrelevant.” Brain melted. A right-wing podcaster in a robe. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

FWIW I don’t think that AI is an existential threat, nor on track to become one. I do however think that the leaders of the biggest AI companies, AI’s strongest boosters, and some of the folks who are most adept at using it to exploit others are actively hastening along OTHER existential threats.
