Accountability too late is still accountability, and him speaking out now is inevitably going to impact his career prospects going forwards, so I don't take for granted the weight of his words here. I know that this is too late, but it's certainly not too little. More than any higher ed development in recent memory, institutional subsidies for AI at R1 universities prove that austerity is a choice. It is not “too expensive” to invest in a humanities research infrastructure; rather, it is a choice that R1 universities make not to & subsidize AI instead.
The amount of money I saw one department paying for several AI services in a school year could cover the University’s pay one price textbook costs for nearly their entire enrolled student body in said department
Colleges could subsidize books for students rather than paying for premium versions of ChatGPT

I cannot tell you what absolute fiction this is. AI is heading for a crash and this cackhanded Terminator narrative is being engineered to save them. The fact that the unsubstantiated testimony of a former employee has been the top story on BBC News all day is absurd and irresponsible.

It's also a reminder that being valued for yourself is something you do. If you don't have things that you bring to the table, you have to go cultivate them. And this also frustrates men b/c you can't cultivate them with an eye towards "I have to do X because that's what all women want in a man."
