Gardening for bats? Think bug farming! 🦇🌱

Native plants feed caterpillars. Flowers feed moths. Together, they help grow a bat buffet!

Bat Fact! 🦇 Big Brown Bats love beetles, including agricultural pests. One study estimated that a colony of 150 could eat about 600,000 cucumber beetles in a season.

That’s a lot of free pest control!

I must have been 7 or 8 and flicking through tv landed on a showing of award winning short films. The first one I saw was ok, so I kept watching. The next was Harpiya by Raoul Srevais. That scared me for life. The bird/woman is terrifying

Be a friend to bats! 🦇

Little Brown Myotis are endangered in Canada and are the bats Albertans are most likely to find in buildings and bat houses.

You can be bat-friendly, even when a colony needs managing.

October belongs to the bats. 🦇🍂

They migrate, hibernate, navigate with sound and live surprisingly long lives. And there's still so much we don't know about them.

It's Bat Month! All October we'll be sharing the science, stories and mysteries of bats.

Come hang out with us. 🦇

🦇Rare in Alberta, Eastern Red Bats are long-distance migrants that roost alone in tree foliage, camouflaged like dead leaves or pine cones. Females may raise up to four pups (which is wild!). And borealis means “northern”... so is “Eastern” really the best name?

“Nature has introduced great variety into the landscape, but man has displayed a passion for simplifying it. Thus he undoes the built-in checks and balances by which nature holds the species within bounds.”

Do they know enough about snails?

Hard to imagine anyone truly knowing *enough* about snails.

Help those kids learn snailhood. Get them a Snail Facts advent calendar.

There are citizen Scientist projects happening everywhere these days. Join one doing something you like. Best way to learn about science is hands-on. And believe me, if it is a reputable project guided by a research institute or university, you will be doing science and learning a lot
I envy scientists for discovering new things and their never ending quest to ask "Why?" and learn more. I wish I knew enough to join/help them, but I'll settle for learning from their discoveries. Thank you, scientists.👏

This is neat. Normal microscopes are limited by the size of light waves. Electron microscopes get around that by using tiny-wavelength electrons. This new microscope does something different: it uses clever physics to "cheat" the limits of visible light and see things once thought impossible.
Researchers hope powerful new microscope will reveal ‘root cause’ of incurable bowel disease
No run-of-the-mill tech, ‘Curie’ operates at 10 times the resolution of conventional microscopy and could spur discoveries leading to new treatment
