I was shocked (though I shouldn't have been) to learn, upon listening to Tuesday's public safety committee meeting today, that SPD chief Sayles explicitly said former chief Barnes delayed the Bite of Seattle press conference to be briefed, given that every headline said it was Mayor Wilson.

Just about time for the Mariners to make a real go of it, play really well for a month, drag us all back in to caring, then finish one game back of a wild card spot on the last day of the season, leaving us all (somehow) stunned.

She's super smart and super competent and very very good at communicating, and I do not think she deserves what will be unleashed if she runs. She'd almost certainly both regret it and be changed for the worse for it.

Fixing land use fixes this (and pisses off a different set of people, but it’s a set who deserve to be pissed off.)
An edcuation policy soloution that would get you killed by angry parents but also fix like 60% of problems after a couple of generations is children being randomly assigned a public school within ten miles of their house. That is the school you attend and you cannot transfer.

this is a bit of an obsession of mine especially here in charlottesville. the cost of commercial real estate is prohibitive if you want to experiment and the city seems categorically opposed to small lots and small units that could allow people to start businesses without a huge capital investment

I'm looking forward to them building something, but not really researching the details, and a truck hits it every six months while driving under, and it's got one of those metal patches on it and lots of signs saying 'MAX CLEARANCE 13' 11"' or something like that.
We really are getting into 'The Death of Stalin' and "Der Untergang' ('Downfall') territory.

We can simulate fish schools or ants in ways that solve complex problems (gradient detection, bridge building, nest selection) but no one would create this weird soul/no-soul dichotomy to argue they these that multi-agent swarms of extremely simple rules are “thinking”.
Once you’ve conceded that there’s nothing magic about humans or “living beings” that makes them the only entities allowed to think, it’s really hard to figure out an intellectually honest dividing line where the entities that are exercising creativity and solving complex problems aren’t thinking
