We aren’t abandoning academia. We're asking whether academia, as currently structured, deserves our trust.

Lauren Chambers and I wrote about what it really means to “save” academia for @insidehighered.com 👇

We're having entirely too much fun. :)
The Summer Doctoral Programme, hosted by the OII with @berkeleyischool.bsky.social, is underway!

Week one saw participants presenting their doctoral research, exploring Oxford on walking tours, listening to presentations and lectures from OII faculty, and enjoying a sunny garden party.

New paper w/ UK AISI:

Millions of people now use AI to help them write and communicate. In three experiments (14k participants, 3m+ human ratings) we show that AI writing assistance systematically distorts writer personas – their perceived beliefs, personality, and identity.

Super excited to share a new #FAccT2026 paper with Nel Escher and Nikola Banovic! We show that algorithm auditing policies in the US are wildly insufficient, as they don't account for how public sector algorithms actually function in practice.

“This is the ghost at the center of our field: we keep being right, but wrong keeps winning. Being right is not the same as being enough.” #FAccT2026
Charlton McIlwain makes such a poignant point at #FAccT2026: what has the decades of work that has measured, documented, & evaluated the failure and bias of AI systems done? we have known the negative impact for decades yet very little has changed

2) translation of Marx as quoted, in Spanish, from Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed

I'm spending my PhD researching just this question of what careers in tech "for good" or "in the public interest" look like. Just published an op-ed this weekend about one option: go do tech and/or data work for a non-profit! localnewsmatters.org/2025/11/30/b...

How do activists respond when their posts vanish or views collapse overnight? A new #CSCW2025 paper maps a continuum of “algorithmic resistance,” from self-censorship to creative workarounds to policy advocacy. Read more:

What can #CSCW learn from tech workers who have been involved in collective action and unionization about how to make transformative change within our field?

My new #CSCW2025 paper with Mona Wang, Anna Konvicka, and Sarah Fox seeks to answer this question.
