I tried to order the anthology I was in from the only (?) place selling physical copies in the UK and have been given a *six month window* for delivery. I have never had this happen to me before!!

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now.

NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

'The British historians wrote almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it.'

Eric Williams
'Question' at Lobby today:

"You seem to be just looking at the negatives of [the slave trade] which is of course appalling, but we do have to say about a positive side...we ended it. Don't you accept that?"

No 10: "It's difficult to acknowledge the positive side of the transatlantic slave trade."

More fantasy that isn't about quests or the prevention of/fighting huge threats. I want all those mundane but incredibly important, very thorny personal stakes. Basically: more in that middle ground between epic and cosy

(Also, more trans people. Always more trans people.)
What would you like to see more of in the fantasy fiction of the next five years? Where do you think the genre has room for growth and exploration--or which recent developments would you like to see continued?

I just did a lil audit of "books in my house that I currently want to read and have not yet read" and the good news is that the count of physical books is under 100. The bad news is that we're operating in the realm of over or under 100

Read 30 pages of Notes From a Regicide and already feel like I've been hit by a falling piano 10/10 can't wait to read the rest of the book

Aghhhh placing a 1200 word piece of trans fantasy body horror is proving pretty tricky. If the market I'm waiting on doesn't pan out I might have to take a very sharp knife to that word count

I really need anyone and everyone who writes about "Gen Z" to be more specific about what age of person they're writing about. It's a wildly unspecific term that spans people of very different possible life stages and I wanna know who you're talking about!!

Brief alt text for peeps who need it: windows settings > privacy & security > text and image generation, and a toggle switch that says "text and image generation: windows and anyone using this device can use text and image generation." "Text and image" has been searched in the settings search bar
Heads up windows 11 users, microsoft now has this setting enabled by default.

Be sure to disable it :]

Nature's most beautiful colors are captured in a five-panel floralscape. Red corn poppies draw the eye in from the left, and the purple-blue clematis contrast with the sunflowers on the right-hand side.

Hoohoohoo I treated myself to a book voucher from my productivity bonus at work and managed to grab a couple books from the Le Guin shortlist and they're finally on the way!! Lots of them weren't published in the UK or were published in line with US book retail prices, so they can be expensive

OK pals I have some CRAFT BOOK recommendations.

To start out, I would highly recommend Steering the Craft by the incredible Ursula K LeGuin.

It's great for beginners but also hammers down some fundamentals for established writers too. Good reminders!
