Hey good people of Bsky. Did you know that I'm running a playtest of my very first supplement, Toxicity? I'm looking for playtesters and feebback. Check out the pinned comment for details. #5e #ttrpg #indiegamedev #playtest

How much does the physical landscape shape the culture in your stories? Do your factions adapt completely to their environment, or do they aggressively reshape the land to fit their needs?

A brilliant mechanic at the wrong moment ruins its impact. Pacing is a mechanical rhythm—if a tense loop drags into a bookkeeping crawl, momentum dies.
How do you keep energy up?

What makes a scene feel more intense to read or watch—a tense, rapid-fire argument where both sides are right, or a silent interaction where neither character says what they're actually thinking?

A rule can look bulletproof on a GDoc and completely implode within five minutes of actual table play.

The paper is a liar. Only the playtest tells the truth.

What's the fastest a homebrew rule has ever blown up in your face?

If combat at level 20 takes 45 minutes just to resolve basic math and passive modifiers, the system has collapsed under its own weight. Keep your loops tight.

What's the highest level you've actually played to?

Good game design isn't just about saying "yes, and." Sometimes the best mechanic you can introduce is a hard, unyielding "no."

Friction and hard boundaries make can help success actually feel earned.

How strict are your table rules?

When introducing a major character, do you prefer a quiet, subtle entrance that lets their depth reveal itself slowly, or a high-impact arrival that immediately shows the audience who they are?

A mechanic that works in a video game backend will grind a tabletop session to a halt. Computers handle micro-tracking; physical tables need momentum. Ever adapted a video game mechanic and watched it burn?

Stop designing mechanics with zero risk, zero resource tax, and zero downside. That isn't a choice—it's a tax on the GM. Real strategy lives in trade-offs.

What forces painful choices for you?

The hardest part of TTRPG design isn't high-level play—it's minute one. If players need a manifesto to understand basic turns, onboarding failed.

What's the worst rulebook trap?

Randomness isn't just about rolling dice; it's about managing panic. If a random roll only results in flat damage, you miss out on improvisational chaos.

How do you handle RNG?

As I near the end of auditing my first supplement, I've learned something valuable. I hate editing 😅 Its so much easier to come up with an idea, but it's a whole different monster to sit down and pick through every word. #GameDesign #TTRPG #DnD #Writing #Editing

Meaningful choices in game design require actual friction. If every potion, feat, or action carries zero risk or drawback, you aren't offering a strategic choice; you're just giving out free stats. What's your favorite high-cost mechanic? #TabletopRPG #GameDesign #IndieDev #RPG

Theory: The "Fail Forward" as a mechanic TTRPG design. Rolling a Nat1 shouldn't just end your turn. It should introduce chaos and make the story more interesting. How do you handle failure?

Designing mechanics is 10% inspiration and 90% realizing players will optimize the fun out of your brilliant system. 😅 Building tight loops means asking: Does this choice actually matter, or is it just noise? #GameDesign #IndieGameDev #TTRPG #RPG #GameDev

The best mechanics aren't the ones that add complexity—they're the ones that get out of the way.
Streamlining turn economy in TTRPGs or hiding UI elements in video games keeps momentum high.
What mechanic should designers leave out?

Yes! This is practically a given when writing out your own campaign setting 😅 you need that historical depth... and it's always a lost magical kingdom that knocked on the door of the gods 🤣
I like stories where the world feels older than the protagonist.
Not because the lore is dumped on you, but because every ruin, weapon, ritual, and scar implies someone else already fought their apocalypse and lost.
