In case you missed it, the Labour government over the past few weeks has:

- Doubled the rough sleeping fund, adding an extra £432m to offer everyone sleeping rough a route off the street by Christmas

- Extended statutory paternity pay to self-employed dads and same-sex partners

🧵Spotted at the Ngatimoti Festival in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A small human (5?) with curly red hair, glares with absolute outrage at bucket full of peonies.
Pointing with UTMOST accusation, she roars: "LOOK AT THOSE SILLY FLOWERS!"
She does not truck with floral frippery.

I'm delighted that the Prime Minister has today introduced two weeks paid paternity leave for self-employed dads

16% of working men in Bracknell Forest are self-employed. Today's announcement is worth up to £194 extra a week for self-employed dads at a time when it can make the biggest difference

All of which means that the answer to the question “why is Portugal a nation” is, basically, “because it is”. You can see points in the story where it could have been otherwise – but none of those things happened.
On Portugal and Portugueseness
Yet more waffling on the contingency of national identity. Also: some gratuitous Americanisations.

What’s that you say? Liz has a new book out which even the Telegraph is saying is even more unhinged than the last one? Wonderful, I’ll post this then.

My kids are absolutely the best people. Yday we found out that my FiL died - my 11yo held himself together to walk my 8yo back home before we told her, and took himself away so she had peace to hear it. Today the 8yo deliberately distracted me from tears by asking about my favourite zoo animals.

Had this conversation at a recent local project meeting where someone suggested we need to have a less dense population in part of one of our towns...
TBH, with a literal handful of exceptions, you can have the old high street back if you are willing to knock down and densify the actual buildings on, in and around the high street.
The old high street isnt coming back - so what does the new one look like?

There really isn't much more to it than that. Disaster prep is just the latest discourse. Look at the actual advice, it's all pretty normal and sensible. There's no big secret D-Notice forcing the media to coverage it. It's just getting sweet, sweet clicks.

The government has renewed longstanding advice in disaster preparedness, with a bit more energy than usual because lots of cyber stuff atm, bit of Russia, and particularly el Niño. Have you seen the weather this weekend?

The media is doing loads of coverage because you're clicking it.

This is genuinely incredibly infuriating in a housing crisis - and a classic consequence of purity over pragmatism.

1744 much needed homes, 98 for social rent and 231 affordable. Yes, not as many as you'd like but now you're not getting a single one.

Green politics again.
I've written to the Mayor of Lewisham after Landsec deprioritised the Lewisham Shopping Centre redevelopment.

The scheme wasn't perfect, but losing a once-in-a-generation £1.5bn investment in our town centre raises serious questions.

We need to know what happens now.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere*

Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines

As a species we decided, “we will survive”

Let’s do that some more

🤦 U-ground cables bc they can't be air cooled for free like OHL have to be wider spaced. To match a 400kV double circuit OHL you'd be looking at a dozen cables across 4 trenches and 200+ft wide disturbance zone!

Undergrounding cables is vastly more environmentally destructive and expensive than pylons.

I live very near two nuclear power stations, a wind farm, a huge substation and loads of pylons. I drive past them loads and I'm dead proud that Heysham is central to our energy security.

Agree with every word of this: and the same applies to British politics.

The idea there is a uniparty or it just doesnt matter is one of huge privilage: Labour winning in 2024 matters to the 350k kids who have been lifted out of poverty or every renewable plant that is built.
Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching.

It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big!

President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!
youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"
