i dislike the whole project but his paintings have always overwhelmingly struck me as NAIVE in a way that he doesnt seem to intend-- he's treating the illo as lowbrow and authorless and making a joke of putting it into Fine Art, but all i can see is man this fucker had no grasp of drawing at all lol
I'd never seen this Roy Lichtenstein painting before, but it's incredible how he manages unfailingly to make his copies worse than the original comics he's ripping off.

It's really fun to make things. Even if it's just to make fun of the Helldivers 2 community losing its shit over trivial bullshit (tanks with casements instead of turrets).

Cards increase your Risk score as a cost
If your Risk ever reaches 7 then you lose the game.
Play a Reset card to set your Risk to zero.
Some cards are stronger when your opponent's Risk is higher.
You can't ever increase your opponent's Risk.
Assemble combos on board to win.

Grace Curtis - Idolfire
Two young women questing for the same thing from opposite ends of the continent. Failspartans, history, class privilege and country ambition.
Always a fan of good fantasy novels that know what they're about and get it done without resorting to a trilogy.

Mike Carey - Outlaw Planet
Wronged woman with a magic gun learns what makes the world tick.
It was like a TV series. In that a strong premise and powerful start kept me reading through an increasingly flabby middle until I finished it out of obligation.

I'm so tired of RPGs that aren't about anything.

KJ Parker - Pulling the Wings Off Angels
Petty criminal gets caught up with a plan to kidnap an angel and blackmail god.
But is everything as it seems?
Yes.

I wonder if there's a German word for the trepidation you feel when coming near the end of a book and it feels like it might be deferring the ending to a sequel.

Claire North - Slow Gods
One of my very favourite authors doing what feels like an Iain M Banks tribute.
There's an evil empire that's uncomfortably similar to our own, friendly AI drones, planetary evacuation from a supernova and a firefight in a museum.
It's good. It's very very good.

KJ Parker - Prosper's Demon
Exorcist runs into a difficult demon.
Amoral protagonist with a cunning plan they don't share with the reader. Interesting pseudo-historical profession details. Classic Parker. But mini-sized and with a punchy ending.

Robert Jackson Bennett - Vigilance
American dystopia where mass shootings are deliberately engineered and commercialised TV events.
Abrupt and predictable. I guess it's hard to be subtle on this sort of topic because reality has a habit of being even dumber.

I think that's the first time I've DNF'd a book because of the author's dialogue tics.

Joe Abercrombie - The Devils
A Dirty Dozen of heretical misfits protect the Empress of Troy from assassinations on a travelogue of alt Papal Europe.
Plays it very straight - I kept expecting twists that never came - maybe overlong for something so straightforward. Still good.

Love a book where everyone's happily paired off and we've reached the destination and the corner of my ereader says "71% complete".

All I'm saying is that if you're drawing anthropomorphic manifestations of the seven deadly sins and your lust is a sexy lady? Then your gluttony should be a hamburger.

I'm almost entirely on Linux now, but there's one or two things I still need to boot into WIndows for.
So, under windows, the mute button on my headset will mute my mic, but can't unmute it.
Turns out there's, like, five different places to control that in Windows, and they're not all in sync.

KJ parker - Making History
A group of scholars is asked to fabricate an ancient civilisation.
Of course there's only one story that follows from that premise, but a KJ Parker book that's not about a war is a rare treat.

Travis Baldree - Miss Gentle and the Case of the Very Flat Monk
Fantasy murder mystery.
And talking of books that leave things unsaid, here's a story that's exactly one scene too long. Like it was stapled on to the end to explain all of the things that didn't need to be.
August 3, 2026 at 6:03 PM
Grady Hendrix - The Blanks
Rich happy family on a rich holiday island with one tiny problem.
Lovely horror weirdness that isn't easily explained or boiled down to a simple metaphor.
August 3, 2026 at 6:01 PM
Anne Leckie - The Long Game
An alien discovers that humans live so much longer than its own species, and decides to do something about it.
I do love when a book leaves the important things unsaid. The narrator's joy is so depressing to a reader who can see what's happening.

I don't normally bother posting the short stories I read, but I got stuck in a promising novel that turned into a real slog. And it's nice to be excited about reading things again.

John Scalzi - 3 Days, 9 Months, 27 Years
I'd sworn off Scalzi, but glad I gambled on this. It's good to remember that he has more than one mode.
It's a time travel story, but not that sort of time travel story. Sad and peaceful.
