Anand is the best (and I'm doing an event with him at, yes, @cityartssf.bsky.social Thursday, for his new book Man in the Mirror). Couldn't agree more that cities are refuges or places of last resort for people kicked out of rural/suburban/pseudo-idyllic America.
Holy shit.

“Because nobody imagines living here,” said Thaw […] “if a city hasn’t been used by an artist, not even the inhabitants live there imaginatively.”

There is something rather wonderful about these little animations @canongate.co.uk have been putting out to go with the wonderful Lanark by Alasdair Gray. Whoever decided Alan Cumming should be the narrator deserves a raise.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.
This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

From the Scottish Enlightenment to the Scottish Endarkenment

Scotland’s universities are falling apart. Edinburgh is axing 90 degree courses in arts and humanities including single honours Scottish Literature. These are the courses that teach Scotland about Scotland

The Scottish Endarkenment has dawned in this dumbed-down nation
The mass closure of university courses is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the unravelling of Scottish culture today, says Neil Mackay

Second week on strike with UCU Edinburgh. We will be on strike for five weeks - taking out the entire first half of term, up to the first assessments - but we could be back in the classroom tomorrow if management withdrew the threat of compulsory redundancies.

This presents a serious challenge to those of us in 'AI positive' institutions, where we have no choice but to engage with AI to some extent. (Tho' students here have an ethical opt-out, teachers do not.) We must educate our students about ALL aspects of AI, including the (un)ethical underpinning.
"GenAI is here, so I'm going to teach my students how to use it well."

Are educators who choose to do this aware that they're complicit in exploiting and traumatizing data labellers in Global Majority countries?

I guess they would have willingly enslaved people 200 years ago.

Today, staff @ University of #Edinburgh are striking to protest recently announced cuts - incl. the forced closure of >90 courses.

Principal Prof Sir Peter Mathieson accused the union of "weaponising" students. I find this enraging, so: a short (quite personal) thread.

There are many terrible things about this story, but perhaps the worst is HE investing 6 figures in a spurious DRM wrapper. These images should have been in the public domain. National digital heritage belongs to all of us. This is why #OpenData & #OpenKnowledge matters.

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.
