It’s nice to see everyone’s textual analysis of The Odyssey

It’s almost like the humanities give you entertainment, feelings, pleasure, and fun/interesting stuff to talk about, as well as lenses into both past and current society

Did an interview for the podcast "The Callback with Lauren Allen," which takes a historical look at works that have won Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys. It was a fun time talking about this early anthology episode that won the very first Emmy. Check it out! youtu.be/uvQqmaEPT3U?...

My 3-year-old spotted my old Iron Giant poster and asked to watch the movie. It's not readily available on any of the streaming services we have. So in case you're wondering if a 20+-year-old DVD works in a PS5, it does! #physicalmediarules

I always ask my students in my Billy Wilder class for their top five films at the end of the semester. No surprises at the top: easy winner Sunset Blvd, and a three-way tie for second between Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, and The Apartment.

I have a new feature essay at MUBI Notebook on the Paramount-WB merger. It goes long on our billionaire-dominated media monopoly, the Ellison empire, the effects of the merger, and most importantly, HOW it can be blocked and how we can take back our cultural system.

A personal note: I was very touched to hear Best Editing winner Andy Jurgensen thank his aunt Barbara Hall. As an Academy archivist, she took an interest in my research and, miraculously, found me George Stevens's pocket diary. A miracle. Five Came Back would not have been what it was without her.

With the horrifying capitulation by Columbia, and as someone that has worked in the college admissions space for 20+ years, I would want more like to rail against the right's ABSOLUTE OBSESSION w/GPA and test scores as being the only thing that should matter for admissions. It is an asinine metric!

The Hollywood Conference affirmed my love of small, thematic conferences. I saw so many inspiring talks, and there was enough downtime to have actual conversations with people I have known for a long time and with people I just met here. I hope there will be a second iteration. #HWC2025

Looks like Los Angeles is going to show off its A+ weather for the Hollywood Conference this week. Bring your sunglasses for the LA sunshine and light sweaters for our breezy evenings (and overzealous air conditioning in the School of Cinematic Arts). #HWC2025
